At Purdue Bands & Orchestras, faculty, staff, and student leaders are always striving to ensure members of our department have an amazing experience. Outside of rehearsals and performances, we host networking events, monthly activities, leadership development opportunities, and more. As a part of our department, there is something for everyone!

During the 2018–2019 school year, these are just a few of the events our department hosted:

1. Purdue University Dance Marathon Team

This November, we had a team of several Purdue Bands & Orchestras students who participated in the annual Dance Marathon to raise money on behalf of Riley’s Hospital for Children. They stayed up for 24 hours during the event, participating in an exciting night of dancing and entertainment with hundreds of other Purdue students at the Recreation and Wellness Center. Three of our students completed an 18-hour dance marathon, and our Drum Major, Brendan, was recognized as Participant of the Year! Through their fundraising and enthusiasm for the cause, our team raised $915 for the children at Riley’s.

2. Advisory Board Meeting in Miami, Florida

Every winter, Purdue Bands & Orchestras faculty and staff select a few student leaders as department representatives to attend our bi-annual advisory board meeting. Usually held in Florida, this weekend is not only an incredible chance to network with advisory board members and refine leadership and public speaking skills; it’s also a chance for some fun in the sun!

3. Kappa Kappa Psi & Tau Beta Sigma Day of Service

The brothers and sisters of KKP and TBS always dedicate a day each year to completing service projects around Elliott Hall of Music and Slayter Center for the Performing Arts. From cleaning out Room 30 and the Supply and Operations offices to re-organizing music in the library and the Kloset, these students make a big impact on the department. Without band and orchestra boosters, we rely on the assistance of our impressive students to help us operate, and we are always grateful when TBS and KKP step up to make a difference!

4. Purdue Orchestras’ Annual Halloween Costume Contest

Each year, the Purdue Philharmonic Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra participate in a Halloween Costume Contest, judged by faculty and staff from the department. Help your section come up with the most creative costume idea and win candy and bragging rights! We’ve seen everything from the World’s Largest Drum and Rose Art Crayons to the Sims, Boilermaker Special, and everyone’s favorite Starship Robots.

5. Purdue Bands & Orchestras Formal

One of our Student Life Volunteer Management Team’s yearly projects is planning the department’s formal dance. It’s a necessary chance to let loose and dance the night away with friends near the end of spring semester. Watch the department’s “Weekly Notes” newsletter to stay informed for events like this one and more! Last year we held everything from “Bob Ross Coloring Night” and “Study Sessions” to “Pumpkin Carving,” “Crafts and Cocoa,” and a “Basketball Tournament.” These are great opportunities to make friends when the semester starts. Don’t miss out on the fun!

We can’t wait to have you in Purdue Bands & Orchestras!
