It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of “Innovation in Mobile”, who took its first breath in 2015 with the launch of Google’s Project Fi. It was a time of excitement and promise as new and independent carriers emerged, challenging the status quo and pushing the boundaries of the mobile industry. Sadly, “Innovation in Mobile” took its final breath on March 15, 2023, when Mint Mobile was acquired by T-Mobile.

During its short but vibrant life, “Innovation in Mobile” brought about significant advancements in the mobile industry, offering consumers more choices, competitive pricing, and unique service offerings. Seamless network switching from Google Fi, potential new mobile carriers with CBRS shared spectrum, multi-SIM eSIM and streamlined global roaming, are some of the most impactful innovations that the mobile world have witnessed.

However, its life was tragically cut short by the following ailments:

  1. Mergers and acquisitions that wiped out all the independent carriers in the United States.
  2. All major MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) being bought by the big three mobile carriers.
  3. Continued high price for spectrum auctions further strengthened the power of incumbent large carriers with deep pockets, eliminating all possibility for newer and smaller challengers.

These ailments ultimately led to the demise of “Innovation in Mobile”, leaving the industry with less competition and fewer groundbreaking ideas.

“Innovation in Mobile” is survived by its three aging parents: AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. While they continue to provide the majority of mobile services in the United States, their dominance has cast a shadow on the innovative spirit that once defined the industry.

As we remember “Innovation in Mobile”, let us not forget the impact it had on our lives and the way it pushed the industry to reach for new heights. May its memory serve as a reminder of the importance of competition and innovation in the world of mobile communication.

Rest in peace, “Innovation in Mobile” (2015–2023).
