The varsity boys’ golf team clinched first place at the 2018 Academic Athletic Association Boys’ Golf Annual Championship, defeating the Washington Eagles with a score of 416–453 on May 14 at the Lincoln Golf Course. Not only did the Cardinals win the championship game, but the team also ended the season with 6 wins and 0 losses.

The top scorers from Lowell were senior co-captains Joshua Lim and Jeffrey Jiang. Lim scored a 70 and Jiang scored an 82.

For the past three years, Lim has held the first place spot at the San Francisco Section Boys’ Golf Individual Tournament Finals. Lim has been working hard to achieve this impressive feat since he joined the team during his freshman year. “I’m proud of what I was able to accomplish during my high school golf career,” Lim shared. “More than anything, I feel relieved that my hard work paid off in the best way possible.”

Golf head coach Juan Lopez, along with Lim and Jiang, shared that they are extremely proud of the team’s achievements this season: winning the championship game and making it to the NorCals Tournament.

To prepare for the tournament, the entire golf team practiced persistently before the match to make sure they performed well enough to beat their closest rival, the Eagles. Despite the pressure to do well, Jiang felt really relaxed and enjoyed the game. “It wasn’t really stressful even though I was worried about winning before the match started,” Jiang said. “It was really nice and peaceful, and I had a lot of fun.”

Although golf is often perceived as an individual sport, leadership and teamwork are also important components of playing golf. Being captain of any sports team takes a lot of work, but both Lim and Jiang enjoy leading the team. For Jiang, his favorite part about being captain is “talking to [the] team and hyping them up for games.” According to Jiang, he also tries to give younger team members golf advice as often as he can, so they can improve their game and reach their full potential. Although golf takes up a lot of time, Lim and Jiang consider golf to be a “priority,” so it makes their time playing golf completely worth it.
