A Collective Conversation — A Case Study of SeedCamp’s Meet & Greet

Meet and greets, gatherings, pitch showcases, and workshops. As a newcomer to the Dublin startup community, I have been impressed and overwhelmed by the number of events one can attend in just a week’s time. Curiosity has drawn me to attend some, my boss others; but one effect of such events keeps me engaged — these events start collective conversations.

Last week my Lucey Fund colleague David Scanlon and I attended SeedCamp’s Dublin meet & greet to hear about their process and what sort of applicants they hoped to find in Dublin. This brought a crowd of entrepreneurs out as well, and together we synced our schedules and made our way to Google’s playground of an office.

Designed to provide entrepreneurs the opportunity to learn about Seedcamp’s acceleration program, the event also was the catalyst to a collective conversation around startups, accelerators, and investment. We heard from Mark Cummins‪ founder of Pointy and ‪Emer O’daly‪ of Love and Robots; the managing director of Act Venture Capital, John Flynn; and of course Ricardo Schäfer and Sia Houchangnia from SeedCamp. But we also heard from some the 50 or more young founders through their questions and the conversations that followed.

Together our discussions ranged from how to make a competitive application for accelerators, to how do you know how much investment to seek in a seed round… (the answer “it should feel a little uncomfortable for the funder and the founder”).

One quote seemed summed up the evening. “When you go and look for money you get advice. When you go and look for advice… you’re more likely to get money.” This bit of encouragement — to continually seek information, perspective, and advice — characterized the night at SeedCamp’s meet & greet, and can be as true for the experts as it is for the colleague or peer.

We love to sell the benefit of the expert advice, but sometimes forget the value of a collective conversation.
