Whenever foreign relatives come to visit, they all want the same thing — ‘Fish & Chips’. And every time, I give them the same thing — a flaccid, oily mess covered in orange and some soggy chips that look as if they actually resent their creation. It’s not my fault, that’s just how most of the restaurants do it here. However, if you can’t make an effort to do the pilgrimage to one of these actual amazing fish and chips in London on actual National Fish & Chip day, then when can you? These are my top five; for more information and to find your nearest magic Fish & Chip shop, click the link below:

The Rock & Sole Plaice

Established in 1871, this is one of the oldest chippies in town, serving a bustling range of locals and tourists alike. The restaurant maintains simple decor and a traditional seafood menu including fried fish and chunky chips. In the warmer weather, you’re going to want to get here early — they have a great outdoor seating area where the vibe is perfect to wind away a long summer afternoon. The fish is fried with the skin still on — I personally prefer the taste and also you know what type of delicious fish it is. Just a heads up, as I’m sure some of you might find that off-putting. It is great though.

Poppies Fish & Chips

Traditional fish-and-chip shop decorated with 1950s memorabilia, offering table service or takeaway. Poppies’ is renowned for their authentic ‘East End fish and chips’ and maintains their original menu accordingly, with hot salty chips and fresh, battered fish. The only problem I have with Poppies is that once you go, you invariably want to keep going back every single day until you go bankrupt. Friendly staff, cracking atmosphere and huge portions.

Kerbisher & Malt

The original Kerbisher & Malt restaurant and takeaway opened in 2011, and ever since then have been causing ‘waves’ (do you get it, like the ocean, like fish) with their upmarket twist on the traditional fish and chips. They are dedicated to providing fresh food prepared without preservatives or chemicals, and so all of their dishes, no matter the fact that they look the same as the classic fish supper, could possibly be considered healthy. Possibly. I’m not saying they are, but possibly. 10/10 for denial potential here. Love it.

The Seashell of Lisson Grove

Despite the name sounding a little like a Mills & Boon Novel, this long-running fish and chip institution is infact robust, hearty and far from flighty. With a traditional menu of fried fish and chunky chips, The Seashell of Lisson Grove offers a fast and tasty takeaway or a casual dine-in experience next to the restaurant’s large aquarium. Eat fish whilst staring at fish. Little bit morbid, but maybe you like that. I do.

Toff’s Of Muswell Hill

Established in 1968, Toff’s is an award winning fish and chip shop, fully licensed restaurant and take away in Muswell Hill. As well as a traditional range of fish cod, haddock, plaice, rock and skate available, they also extend their choice to whole fish like plaice, lemon sole, dover sole, sea bass and trout — so if you’re looking to go above and beyond in your fish dinner, then it has to be Toff’s. They also once appeared in an episode of Top Gear. The more you know.

That’s your lot on this article, hope you’re feeling properly warm, salty and greasy. For more information, and to find your nearest London Fish & Chip Shop, click the link below:
