Join the crime fighting Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on World Turtle Day, and buy yourself a tasty pizza. In order to make sure that you get the best one possible, check out where in the world the top pizzas are made and book yourself a table at the pizzeria of dreams. Here are just five of our top favourites; but click the link to the map guide below, and discover your closest award winning pizza!

Bæst, Copenhagen

Bæst is one of our all time favourite restaurants, and also continually voted amongst one of the best pizzerias in the world. This all organic, Italian-inspired establishment serves a hugely popular and surprisingly affordable range of classic dishes and small plates, however the real deal are the innovative freshly prepared thin crust circles of deliciousness. The perfect crisp bite, the ideal soft slice and just the right amounts of fresh tomato and light drizzled olive oil along with the toppings of your choice make this just the ideal experience every time.

La Gatta Mangiona, Rome

This delightfully simple, cat-themed restaurant is frequently heralded as one of the top pizzerias in Europe — so worth a visit even if you’re a dog lover. Alongside an equally praise worthy menu of other delicious treats, the pizzas come in a small but perfectly formed range of flavours, all with their signature flat base with raised edges. Our recommendation is the pizza dello zio — tomatoes, anchovies and ‘raw’ slices of buffalo mozzarella, Genoese-style focaccia with chickpea paste and all topped off with salt cod. It’s salty, it’s tomatoey, it’s creamy and it’s mind-blowingly good.

Pizzeria Beddia, Philadelphia

Whether you love the long wait times or think it’s pretentious, once you do finally get your pie from Pizzeria Beddia it’s pretty much all worth it. Beddia is known for its unique daily pie specialties all single-handedly devised and cooked to order by owner Joe Beddia, and has gained somewhat of a cult following for the rich intense flavours and generous doughy portions. There remains a little controversy over Joe’s insistence of doing it all himself and therefore increasing customer waiting times to sometimes up to two hours, but in our book sometimes having to wait for something makes it all the better. Our tip is to get there early and get your name on the waiting list, then head out and grab a couple of beers and come back when they’re ready. Make an evening of it!

400 Gradi, Melbourne

Melbourne might not be synonymous with Italian cuisine, but 400 Gradi deserve to have put the city on the pizza map. This relaxed open-plan restaurant with a unique polished concrete floor serves wood-fired Neapolitan pizza and Italian mains to an enthusiastic crowd. Heralded as one of the best pizza joints in the country, and for good reason — every public holiday or large scale event comes with it’s own pizza special. The one on the left here was from a recent Mother’s Day, and tastes just as good as it looks. Yes — those are edible flowers.

Dough Boys Pizza, Leeds

The cheekiest chappies in the whole pizza universe, Dough Boys are enthusiastic pizza makers with a quirky menu, strong brand and fresh take on the classic pizza. Some of their culinary feats include the ‘Wet Nun’, with hot dogs, chillies, black pudding & mustard-mayo; and the ‘Novembaa’ made in honour of fireworks night in the UK and topped with slow roasted shoulder of lamb, peasana olives, feta & chimichurri. These wonderful boys are currently residing full time in the Belgrave Music Hall and Canteen, and we can’t recommend that you pay them a visit enough.
