Development began on FFXV ten years ago, and since then Square Enix has been on a roller coaster ride to create a game worthy of the Final Fantasy lineage. The last release in Square Enix’s numbered catalog of Final Fantasy games was Final Fantasy XIV, an online MMORPG launched in 2010 that failed to meet many expectations. While the FFXIV: A Realm Reborn relaunch in 2013 placated many concerns for MMO gamers, Square Enix has left a void for standalone Final Fantasy titles until now. The game has just been released for XBOX One and PS4 consoles. XV takes fans of the series back to the single player experience that made Final Fantasy games such a hit, and adds the dynamics of an open-world sandbox style world made popular in RPGs like TES: Skyrim.

In just two months the franchise will celebrate the twentieth anniversary of arguably the most popular game in the series, Final Fantasy 7. With the highly anticipated remake of FF7 in the works, FFXIV: A Realm Reborn succeeding in the competitive MMO market, and the release of Final Fantasy XV on November 29, 2016, Square Enix have regained a momentum that many thought was lost years ago.

Thus far reception for Final Fantasy XV has been favorable. The aggregator website Metacritic has rated the PS4 version of the game at 84/100, whereas several popular gaming review publications have ranked the game anywhere between 8 and 9 out of 10.

The main character is a prince who obtained magic power from a near death experience.

Customization and exploration are key fundamentals of any successful Final Fantasy title, and Square Enix have delivered on their concepts for the new title. Whereas in past games, players would level up automatically once they reached their level experience cap, in this game leveling must be done by traveling to specific destinations called Havens. This adds an interesting element that completely changes the traditional mechanics of RPG leveling systems. Once players acquire enough experience, they can make the journey to a Haven and customize their leveling experience with Ability Points in the Ascension Grid. The Ascension Grid works similar to other trees you may have worked with in RPGs, and adds a vast depth of customized battle perks in the game. The action based real time battle system makes each battle different, and does away with the turn based sequences you may be familiar with from other Final Fantasy games.

Of course there will also be several summon spells making their return to the franchise.

Are you a fan of Final Fantasy and have you any interest in the latest title?
