If you know someone who is ill and suffering from a chronic medical diagnosis, you probably know that their daily life is a challenge. What the reasonably health and able-bodied person may take for granted is something that the chronically ill could only dream of accomplishing. There are so many considerations and feelings that are a reality for those who take feeling “okay” on any give day that most people wouldn’t consider. Knowing that there are a few simple things that you can do to help someone who is challenged with a chronic illness can help you support your loved one, making their lives just a little bit easier.

Here are six things you can do to support someone struggling with a chronic or debilitating illness

1) Learn

Before you speak with your loved one, find out as much as you can about their illness. What you may know about it could be superficial, or there may be some little-known elements to the disease that are important in understanding what your friend or family member is going through. Like anything, preparation and knowledge give you a better starting point for understanding, allowing you to provide the best support possible.
