NBA Legend Michael Jordan’s time as the owner of the Charlotte Hornets is coming to an end. After 13 years, and more losses than he has ever suffered during his playing days, MJ is ready to cut ties. Charlotte has spent the majority of their time fighting for relevance as they only made the playoffs twice since Jordan took over in 2010.

Charlotte had numerous chances to improve their roster and record, landing lottery picks for almost an entire decade. Jordan’s reputation as a player sadly is the complete opposite of how he has been viewed as an owner. The team notoriously whiffed on franchise altering talents year after year only landing two-star players with Kemba Walker (2011) and Lamelo Ball (2020).

All jokes aside, Jordan’s tenure as the owner of the Hornets is bittersweet. While he proved success on the court does not always translate to success as an owner or in the front office there is still a glaring imbalance of minority ownership in a minority dominated league. Jordan made history numerous times as a player and did so as an owner as well as the only Black majority owner of an NBA team. Jordan is expected to maintain a minority ownership stake within the franchise and receive significant compensation for the sale of the majority control of the franchise.
