Back to Black: What’s New, Exciting, and Returning in Black TV
Culture Editor Bianca Gregg is giving us a rundown on the latest and most exciting shows as we tune into Winter Premiere season. Get your popcorn family. This. Is. Not. A. Drill.
As many of you should know, we have and are in the middle of a pandemic that has shut everything down. From the neighborhood gym, to your favorite cafe — COVID-19 has put a pause on everything including the entertainment industry.
I’ve personally spotted many of my social media friends inquiring about their favorite television shows, wondering if they’ll be returning. Well beloveds, I’ve got some updates for everyone.
‘For Life’
One of my favs will be returning this week on ABC. ‘For Life’ is back Wednesday November 18th on ABC. One of rapper 50 Cent’s many production endeavors was a hit after season 1 and received the greenlight for season 2 with ease. The show stars Nicholas Pinnock, Joy Bryant and Dorian Missick.
‘All American’
The CW’s ‘All American’ will return for season 3 January 18th. The sports centered drama stars Daniel Ezra, Taye Diggs and Samantha Logan. When premiering on Netflix after its second season, it was a trending top 10 show.
‘Power’
As previously mentioned, 50 Cent has several shows in production including the Power saga on Starz. ‘Power Book II: Ghost’ returns with the second half of season 1 on December 6th. Also finishing up production is the next installment of the Power universe, ‘Power Book III: Raising Kanan’ which is set for premiere in 2021.
‘Raising Kanan’ will serve as the prequel to the original Power series that starred Omari Hardwick. Production is also set to begin on ‘Power Book IV: Force’ which will continue the story of Ghost’s right hand man Tommy Egan.
Joseph Sikora is signed on to continue as “Tommy” and the show is slated for a possible late 2021 debut. You can catch the entire saga on Starz.
‘P-Valley’
Another beloved newbie to the Starz line-up, ‘P-Valley’ was renewed for a second season. Season 2 is slated for a late 2021 premiere. We can’t wait!
‘Snowfall’
Speaking of gritty crime dramas, one of the most anticipated to return is ‘Snowfall’ on FX. This show went back into production at the latter of this year and is now set for a Spring/Summer 2021 premiere.
“Snowfall” stars Damson Idris, Isaiah John and Angela Lewis.
‘Godfather of Harlem’
EPIX hit drama about centered around crime boss and Harlem icon Bumpy Johnson is currently back in production for season 2. Would you believe production only began just about a week ago. The show’s second season is slated to premiere in 2021. The crime drama stars Forest Whitaker, Giancarlo Esposito and Ilfenesh Hadera.
‘Wu-Tang: An American Saga’
Hulu, RZA and Alex Tse did something special with this show. ‘Wu-Tang: An American Saga’ is the story of how the rap group ‘Wu-Tang Clan’ was assembled. The show stars Ashton Sanders, Shameik Moore and Erika Alexander. Although the show has been renewed for a second season, no word on when production will begin.
‘Queen Sugar’
OWN’s beautiful drama about a Black family in Louisiana is returning in the Spring and I am so happy. If you are not watching ‘Queen Sugar’ you are truly missing out on some beautiful depictions of Black Love and Black family dynamics. The show stars Kofi Siriboe, Rutina Wesley and Dawn Lynn Gardner.
‘Insecure’
One of my personal favorite’s ‘Insecure’ was a long hiatus prior to the premiere of season 4 and although season 5 was never meant to have an extended period before it’s premiere, COVID-19 may have other plans. The script for season 5 is complete and there have already been several table reads via Zoom. With hope and prayer, ‘Insecure’ will be back in production and complete before 2021 is out. The show stars Issa Rae, Yvonne Orji and Jay Ellis.
Bottom line beloveds — patience will be our best virtue through all of this.
With another lockdown on the horizon, hopefully all these shows will indeed be on our screens to see us through. And if we missed anything, let us know.
