Tonight’s episode picks up where we left off in episode 9 — saving Diana. The gang has the Book of Names in their possession and now they must cast a spell to rid Diana of the curse. Upon the first try, Tic and Leti both pass out into what seems to be a dream but is instead a visit from the women in Tic’s family.

Take notice that the most powerful people in Tic’s family were women, Black women.

Hannah told Tic that his blood would be the key to saving his family. Hattie tells Leti that the Book of Names would now be passed to her, considering she is carrying the future of the bloodline in her womb. Tic also speaks to his mother, Dora, who tells him that his death is the only way to save the family.

With various happenings in the first 40 minutes of the episode, hopes were high that maybe Atticus could do this, and survive despite what his future son wrote about the family. At least he assured Montrose that the book was wrong and that there were many scenarios in the future.

For the spell to work in the favor of Tic, he would need body parts from Titus and Christina. He and Leti conjured Tic’s ancestors to assist them in getting a piece of Titus’s skin.

That portion was successful.

The following day Leti and Ruby meet at their mother’s grave site. Leti asks Ruby to help her and the family by getting a piece of Christina’s body and based on Ruby’s reaction we could seemingly count her out. Right before the family leaves for Ardham along with Ji-Ah, Ruby appears with some of Christina’s blood. She also goes along on the trip.

Prior to leaving for Ardham, Tic meets up with Ji-Ah to apologize to her about denouncing their bond and to let her know that she is his family. Hippolyta and Diana have a bit of a rocky start. Diana is upset with her mother for not being there for her but Hippolyta explains the journey she was on and that she became what Diana wanted her to be. She ultimately promises Diana that she will be able to draw again and we later see how.

Back to Ardham. Atticus eats the piece of skin from Titus and drinks Christina’s blood, he is ready for the final battle. Leti and Ruby have a conversation at the tower like prison from earlier in the season. Leti realizes that Ruby is not Ruby, it’s Christina and that means Ruby is dead. The two get into a fight and Leti falls to her death.

The rest of the family are attacked and captured. They are taken to witness Christina’s ritual. Tic is strapped to the machine to anchor him up when he realizes the plan has backfired. Christina tells him the plan could have worked if it was not for her catching Ruby trying to take her blood. Christina goes to Atticus and begins the spell. She cuts each one of Atticus arms so he could bleed out all over her body. Leti awakes and rushes to Tic. He sees Leti and comforted by the thought that she is alive, he dies.

Leti approaches Christina reciting a spell in hopes of reversing what has happened. Hippolyta tells Ji-Ah the spell will not work unless Tic and Christina are somehow joined together. Ji-Ah brings out the fox spirit and grabs both Christina and Aticus as Leti recites the spell. It works. Christina is no longer immortal.

Leti also makes sure to lock in that no white people could ever do magic again.

I am not mad at it.

Montrose approaches Tic’s lifeless body, telling his son to get up and that it is all over. Hippolyta gives Montrose a letter that Tic had written to him. As we listen to the letter be recited, the family carry Tic’s lifeless body back to the car.

In the letter, Tic apologizes to his father for lying and telling him he would live through the spell. He tells Montrose he had to do it to save the family. Tic tells Montrose that his grandson will be his second chance to be the father he wanted to be but could not be to Tic.

Yea my feels too.

Christina still partially crushed by debris is yelling for help. Diana comes across her trapped body along with Tic’s Shoggoth. Christina tries to play victim begging Diana for help. Diana reveals her new and improved bionic arm, by way of Hippolyta. She uses it to crush Christina’s throat, killing her of course.

A moment of joy and sweet revenge.

Takeaways:

Can we please have a moment of silence for Ruby Baptiste and Atticus Freeman. Hippolyta I need you to use that time machine to bring them back if we are blessed with a season 2.

I think we all knew from the first 5 minutes of the episode that Tic was not going to survive. Yes we hoped for something different but we knew better.

Diana delivering the kill was fitting. Her father was killed because of the Braithwhite’s. She had been cursed by way of an evil white man being involved in magic and the Braithwhite family and to top it off her dear friend Emmitt Till being killed because of a lie from the lips of a white woman. Sweet revenge!

Well that’s a wrap on “Lovecraft Country” season 1. At this time there is no word on a season 2. We can only keep our fingers crossed here at BALDWIN.
