The Black community has lost an icon today. James Nathaniel “Jim” Brown was one of the most talented and influential people to grace the face of the Earth. He was a star running back for the Cleveland Browns from 1957–1965, winning three MVP awards and one championship in 1964. He retired after amassing 12,313 rushing yards, just under 2500 receiving yards and 126 total touchdowns.

As if being a Hall of Fame running back was not enough, Jim Brown was also an activist and famed actor. Brown took on the tall task of eliminating gang violence in LA, by and founding a program to help disadvantaged inner-city youth and ex-convicts. Along with his activism Brown starred in a number of films like the cult classics ‘I’m Gonna Git You Sucka” and ‘Any Given Sunday’.

Brown is survived by his two children and will remain beloved by many. He will be remembered for his hard-nosed running style, on screen persona and his care for his community. Thoughts and prayers go out to the Brown family during this tough time.
