After the explosive news of Zeke being fathered by Mecca by way of Monet, we find out a few more details about Mecca and Monet’s past. Betrayal and lies come to a head tonight with a huge consequence for Tariq.

Zeke is brought down to the police precinct along with Monet and Davis. It appears Zeke will not have to turn himself in, nor is he the number one suspect in the Jabari/Ramirez murder case. Because of the revelation of Ramirez being dead before the murder of Jabari with the same gun, it’s not possible Zeke committed the crimes. Kamaal suspects Tariq may have more to do with the case than meets the eye.

Brayden is still hiding the fact that he has been hanging around Cane from Tariq. Even when Tariq asks Brayden if Cane has been around, he doesn’t take the opportunity to come clean with Tariq, which later comes back to haunt them.

Monet calls Cari and tells her the job is done. Zeke is no longer a suspect so their business is finished. She warns Cari to stay away from Zeke and treat the family from here on out as strangers. Kamaal and Whitman visit Cari and ask for her help with deciphering Jabari’s novel. Kamaal would like her to read the novel and see if she can piece anything together from it.

Monet requests that Mecca meet her at her bar to talk. During the conversation, we realize that Monet likely had Zeke at a very young age. Mecca mentions their time together when Monet and himself were only 16 years old. Mecca is offering to allow Monet to chose the life and man she wants by providing trust funds for all of her children. He tells her to simply sign the paperwork but she refuses. Mecca will not leave New York without Monet so the pressing will continue.

In class, Cari decides to ride Tariq over the subject of karma. Clearly she has made the connection with the novel and Tariq, so much so that she tells law enforcement that the book is based on Tariq’s life. Whitman brings up that the kids that were brought in for drugs recall the dealer being white. Cari informs them that it was likely Tariq’s roommate Brayden. Lauren goes to see Cari and admits she does not want to wear the wire anymore. Cari tells Lauren that the dealer the other students have mentioned to the police is a preppy white kid and that the police think it’s Brayden. Cari lies and tells Lauren that Tariq is not on the radar and when Lauren suggests telling Tariq what is happening, Cari tells her not to and that she needs to get more information on Brayden.

Monet picks Tariq up from school and she tells Tariq she is now aware of him lying about killing Jabari. She decides to give Tariq another chance to earn her respect. She requests that Tariq finds out who Cane’s connect is. Monet also enlists Cane to find out what Tariq’s weaknesses are in order to control him. Cane agrees to the job.

Brayden returns to his room and Cane is there. Cane makes it seem like he has been trying to reach Tariq, which we know is not true. Lauren comes to the door and trying to find Tariq but instead is introduced to Cane as “Lorenzo.” Lauren asks Cane if he knows Tariq and Cane says no but he tutors his cousin Zeke. Lauren tells Cane that she had just seen his mother with Tariq and she mentions that Tariq is apartment hunting. Brayden quickly deads the conversation and asks Cane to join him for a burger, the pair leave.

Tariq meets up with Diana and requests she gets Cane to give him some additional money. He tells Diana he needs the money to get custody of his sister. Diana agrees to help Tariq under the condition that if he gets any information on what Cane is hiding to tell her. Diana tells Tariq she knows he is the one who switched out the product for sugar. When Diana goes to see Cane, she tells him Tariq needs the additional money to help his sister and that if he does not agree to help, she will tell Monet he is the one that switched the drugs.

Monet goes to visit Lorenzo and updates him on Zeke’s case. Lorenzo tells her she just needed to have faith that everything would work out. When Lorenzo receives a call from Saxe, he asks Monet to leave so he can take the call. She appears very suspicious about the call but leaves without issue.

Tariq follows Cane from his meet up with Brayden. He follows him all the way to the door of Mecca’s place but is caught be Nuff and beat up. Cane and Mecca’s chef watch from a security camera and they ask Cane if he knows Tariq. Cane denies knowing him but the chef seems to be suspect that Cane does know and asks Nuff to let him go. Mecca is made aware of the situation and they question Cane again about if he knew Tariq. Cane denies it again and Mecca turns on Nuff. Mecca tells Nuff that all it takes is one civilian complaint and their cover could be blown. He signals for the chef to stab Nuff in the neck, he dies. Cane pockets Tariq’s phone and takes it to Monet the following day. He is angered that Monet could have gotten both himself and Tariq killed. He questioned the type of mother Monet is to allow him to be both a soldier and her son.

With help from Lauren, Tariq is able to secure a place and a lease to present at Yaz’s custody hearing. At the apartment, Lauren talks to Tariq about Jabari’s murder and Tariq confirms that the book Jabari was writing was not about Brayden. He tells Lauren that Jabari told him who the book was about. Kamaal and Whitman are listening outside and now have enough proof to conduct a search on Tariq’s dorm.

Monet grabs Tariq up on his way to the custody hearing. She purposely attempts to force Tariq to miss the hearing and offers up Mecca’s name as the connect and tells Monet he has an address. When Monet tries to flex her power over Tariq, he tells her she is wrong and thinks she is in control. Tariq reveals that Cane switched the product for sugar, Dru is still sleeping with Everett and Diana was the one who stole the money from the bar. Monet realizes that she needs Tariq more than she was willing to admit and let’s him go to the hearing.

At the hearing, Tariq proves himself to be fitting to care for Yaz temporarily while Estelle gets help for her drinking. Meanwhile detectives are at the dorm searching for some type of proof to connect Tariq to something. At the moment the detectives are ready to give up on the situation, Kamaal discovers Officer Ramirez’s badge in Tariq’s desk. When Tariq arrives back on campus, he is arrested in front of everyone for the murders of Ramirez and Jabari. When Lauren makes the attempt to go to Tariq, Cari stops her and tells her Tariq is getting what he deserves.

At the prison, the conservator comes to present an envelop that was to be given to Tariq if he was ever arrested for homicide.

The letter, written by Ghost, reads: “I knew you would end up here little nigga. Right where you belong.”

Monet meets up with Mecca and admits she may have messed up things with her children. Mecca asks if it is time for him to meet Zeke. Monet says she needs time to talk to her children but that the time has come. She heads home and takes a few breaths before entering the house. As she comes in, she can hear Spanish being spoken. Upon walking into the dining room, Lorenzo is at the table with the kids. He is a free man and is back home, much to the surprise of Monet.

Takeaways:

Who ordered for this season to be this spicy!

Let me be the first to say, Cari needs to be welcomed into the body bag committee as soon as possible. She manipulated Lauren like it was nothing and now that girl got her man locked up. The nerve of Cari to play innocent.

Mecca put some pressure on Monet and right when it appeared to work, Lorenzo is home. Monet looked so sick!

What’s with no one knowing anybody’s nickname at all on this show. Monet does not know who “Mecca” is. Cane introducing himself by his actual name to Lauren and being recorded on that watch. Now he put a target on his own back. And let’s not forget, Dru’s name is in that little notebook Jabari had when he was playing Inspector Gadget last season.

Now we gotta wait two weeks and my mind is going all over the place because I have my predictions but clearly, this season is truly unpredictable.
