‘Queen Sugar’ Season 6 Episode 5 ‘Moving So Easily Through That Common Depth’

Nova is on the phone speaking to a lawyer about the discoveries on the family’s land. They are still trying to figure out the DNA of the bones however excavation on the land must end. Ralph is upset his father is being labeled as a murderer with no actual proof considering the results of the testing on the bones could take awhile. Pending the results, a civil suit could be filed against the family.

Vi packs up a box for Darla to help her reduce some pregnancy stress. Vi is also dealing with stress over everything happening with the land. She’s been stress eating heavily and becoming concerned about her blood pressure and weight. Hollywood is playing basketball again thanks to Gabriel. Vi thanks him for being there for Celine and Gabriel the way he has been.

Prosper seems to be very hard on Billie. Billie brings him some organic muffins for breakfast and all Prosper can talk about is how she stole from a local bakery as a child. He also talks down about a coffee machine she purchased for him. Billie is just trying to make her father happy and comfortable. Later that day, Prosper and Ralph go to visit Hollywood at his lounge. Prosper vents about the difficulties about making a connection with his daughter. He thought Vi may have been upset that he defended Billie but Hollywood assures him that she is not. This is his second chance to make things right with his daughter.

Darla admits to Ralph she is worried about the baby and finances. Ralph assures her that he is taking care of it and he needs her to relax. He tells Darla he has a plan B, some work with his friend Theo that he was locked up with. Darla is not happy with the thought of him working with Theo considering his past reputation.

Charley is back home and embraces Micah when he comes in. She notices he is wearing cologne which is different for him. Charley admits she has not been sleeping well. Between the remains being found on the land and rebuilding her relationship with Davis publicly, she’s been under stress. Micah expresses that he had some recent bouts with anxiety between his own experiences with the police and Prosper’s incident.

Darla goes to see Vi at her restaurant. She tells Vi she has been worried about Ralph Angel. Darla had her parents sign off the money she had put away for college over to her. She wants to help contribute to their situation. Vi tells her there is nothing wrong with having a nest egg as a woman. Ralph meets Theo to get more details on the job. Theo wants someone he can trust on the job with him. Theo gives Ralph money and admits it is a thank you for him having his back when they were locked up. Ralph is still considering helping Theo with the job.

Charley goes to see Nova and they discuss how Charley is being dragged on social media for taking Davis back. The sisters think back to conversations they had with their father. Charley asks Nova if their father killed anyone but Nova tells her no of course not.

Hollywood, Vi, Celine and Gabriel have a family dinner. Gabriel compliments how much he loves Vi’s food. Celine finally gets the paperwork started on her divorce. Hollywood gifts Gabriel a basketball. Celine thanks both Vi and Hollywood for everything they have done for her and her son. After Vi takes Celine and Gabriel back to the hotel, she comes home and tells Hollywood how much Gabriel spoke of him. She admits that she has noticed some things different with Hollywood. Vi makes sure that Hollywood is still okay with not having any children of his own. He tells her legacy is about more than just kids.

Ralph talks to God before beginning the job with Theo. He admits that he knows what he is doing is wrong but he still asks for God’s protection. He promises moving forward he will do right and will be the type of man his family can be proud of. Theo rides up on Ralph and tells him one of his guys pulled out and now he needs Ralph to help load the truck. Ralph is hesitant and Theo tells him if he does not want to do it he can just simply return the money. Ralph decides to help Theo with the truck. Ralph thinks he heard someone while loading the truck but it’s just paranoia. Theo hands him an envelope full of money, the job just about complete. As Ralph leaves with the computer parts in his car, he thinks he is being pulled over by the police but the officer rides by. Ralph is relived.

Charley goes to visit Vi the next day. She admits that social media is up in arms over her reconciliation with Davis. Vi tells her to stop worrying about what strangers have to say or even think about her relationship with Davis.

Billie apologizes to Nova about outing her to her father. Billie tells Nova she is glad that she is back in her life. For years she tried to find a friend to fill the void of not having Nova and no one ever stacked up. Nova admits she did the same thing. The two women embrace one another.

Everyone meets at Vi’s restaurant for a toast. The family got the news that the bones were 150 years old. Ernest did not kill anyone. Ralph wonders who the remains actually belonged to. Ralph surprises Darla with a Babymoon. When Darla worries it may be too expensive, Ralph tells her he worked a double shift for Theo and plans to do another the following week.

Nova asks her neighbor if he can find a way for her to get further testing on the remains found on the land. He tells her someone at the university could likely do it.

Billie cleans Prosper’s place and he thanks her for being there. The two smile at one another. She tells Prosper it was donut-holes she took from the bakery. He admits she was not stealing, she was just curious. He apologizes for failing her as a child. Billie apologizes for embarrassing him with her antics but he admits she never did. Prosper tells his daughter he loves her.

Takeaways:

Ralph needed to hang that illegal mess up after the first job. His heart is in the right place but this is a huge gamble. It’s not worth it at all.

Billie and Prosper’s journey is very touching. I am happy to see the healing that occurred at the end of the episode.

I can understand some of Vi’s worries. She can see how happy Gabriel is making Hollywood and knows she can not give him a biological child.
