‘Queen Sugar’ Season 6 Episode 7 ‘They Would Bloom and Welcome You’
Resident re-capper and Baldwin Culture Editor Bianca Gregg visits the rich canes and hollowed lands in ‘Queen Sugar’ each Tuesday, delivering to you the lineage and background of this generational drama executive produced by Ava DuVernay.
Darla and Ralph stand outside of the police precinct to turn himself in. Darla plans to bail him out immediately. He apologizes to Darla for everything but she has forgiven him. She plans to be by his side no matter what happens.
Nova wakes up in her destroyed home. She slowly begins the clean up. Charley calls Nova to tell her Ralph turned himself in last night and needs the family’s help with the situation. Nova is visibly upset she must return to the police station. Micah has an awkward run in with his professor. A couple of male students stare at him as he hugs Isiah but Micah doesn’t care. Billie plans to head back home. Prosper tells her if she is hurting he wants to know about it. Hollywood gives Prosper a call to update him on Ralph but he ends the call to bond with his daughter.
Ralph was only supposed to go to the department to answer questions, not turn himself in. Charley tells them that she wishes they had come to her first before going to the station. The case is not looking good for Ralph. Charley wants to know what he told the police. Apparently there are no witnesses or footage that could be used as hard evidence, at least according to Ralph. Charley decides that a family meeting is needed at this time.
Ralph explains to his family why he chose to help with stealing. He tells them about the pay day loans as well as other outlets to take care of his family. Ralph tells the family Sam Landry poisoned his crop. Hollywood is angered by the situation as Vi and Charley make him aware that the justice system won’t care about his reasons. Theo’s charges were dropped after he made a call to Sam Landry which proves Ralph is being set up to take the fall. Vi decides she will confront Landry. She tells Ralph she loves him no matter what and he returns the sentiments.
Billie tells her father in detail what happened between herself and Jimmy Dale. She was able to fight back and thankfully avoided being assaulted. Billie’s mother blamed her for what happened. She felt Prosper ignored the chatter because he never came to speak to her. He admits he did not know what to believe and thought it would all go away. It was easier for him to believe Jimmy than to defend his daughter and he knows that forced her to leave. He is happy Billie has given him another chance to make up for his mistakes.
Vi confronts Sam Landry. There is indeed footage of Ralph committing the robbery. Sam used Theo to set up Ralph. Sam tells Vi she has no cards to play in the situation but Hollywood tells him he can be arrested for fraud. He also claims to have proof that Sam poisoned the crop. Sam wants the farm in exchange for Ralph’s freedom and reminds Vi of how this allegation could ruin the futures of every Bordelon down to Blue.
Micah has his class presentation. His professor decides to ask him further questions on his thesis. His answers are extremely passionate and his professor gives him a round of applause. At the end of the class, the professor offers to celebrate with Micah but he declines.
Vi and Hollywood update Ralph and make him aware that he was set up. Charley tells him that he would take all of the charges alone. Darla reminds him he would end up missing out on the baby’s early years. Ralph refuses to give up the land and accuses everyone of giving up the family’s legacy. Hollywood reminds him that he is at fault. He tells Ralph that the women are willing to let the land go before allowing him to go to prison. Charley plans to move their mother’s remains to the cemetery where their father is buried. Ralph walks out in tears.
Ralph goes into Blue’s bedroom and calls him. He leaves a message telling his son how proud he is of him and could not have asked for a better son than him. Darla watches from the doorway and Ralph is ready for whatever she has to say. She admits she is so angry at Ralph for endangering their family and betraying her trust. She has bottled up her emotions because she ultimately did not want to hurt Ralph. Darla makes him promise no more secrets or lies.
Nova is still cleaning up her place, Charley stops by and Nova tells her at the door about the incident with the police. Charley walks in and sees Nova’s home destroyed. She tells Charley it was about everything that she is, an activist, a woman and Black. Nova cries in Charley’s arms. Charley stays at Nova’s to continue to comfort her and allow her to vent. Charley is upset that she had no leverage in saving the farm and it is pushing her to run for Congress. She tells Nova to get up and fight again.
Billie makes breakfast for her father from a recipe her mother left behind. Prosper asks Billie to stay a little longer and she tells him she will think about it.
Vi meets up with Celine. Celine admits she was ashamed of what she did behind Vi’s back with Hollywood. She admits she doesn’t know who she is outside of a man telling her who she is. She panicked out of loneliness. She apologizes to Vi. Vi relates to Celine with her story about Jimmy Dale telling her she would be nothing without him and that it took a lot of self work to get over it. Vi gives Celine one last bit of money and tells her that she will not be seeing her or Gabriel.
Charley throws her hat in and officially tells the party she will run for Congress.
Sam Landry meets up with Ralph at the farm. He tells Ralph he will get the paperwork ready. Ralph has four to five days to vacate the property.
Takeaways:
Ralph really tried to blame everyone else for his pride and foolish decisions. I am not a fan right now.
My heart hurts for Gabriel! He can no longer have that relationship with Hollywood because of his mother. I do hope Celine gets the healing she needs.
Billie and Prosper’s healing warms my heart every week, more of this please.
