‘Run The World’ Season 1 Episode 2 ‘Because… Ados’
‘Run the World’ is the latest in series recaps written by Culture Editor Bianca Gregg. Check in with her each Sunday for updates on the show.
We begin the episode with Renee trying new tricks on her husband who decides he prefers regular cowgirl. Sondi and Matt appear to be doing better, as she says on her walk with Ella. The pair are called ‘Niggers” by a clearly homeless and broke white man, they laugh it off and hop in a cab. The irony he said this in Harlem while riding his bike full of cans by a statue of Harriet Tubman.
Whitney plays the role of caring fiance after her excursion with Mr. Community Dick, Chris. She is clearly feeling guilty but we know sis is not about to tell Ola about her indiscretion. She is supposed to be meeting Ola’s extended family for dinner but her boss has asked for assistance with a client that is in town. She decides to do the work assignment. It did not help her co-worker made her feel like she would end up quitting her career and becoming the domesticated housewife.
Renee is frustrated with her marriage. Her husband quit his job for his dreams of being in a band so Renee is supporting them financially until his band takes off. Yikes. She feels like ending her marriage. Renee’s husband, Jason, feels Renee has been selfish and too involved in women’s empowerment. Jason brings up slavery in the explanation to his frustrations with the marriage. Renee is disappointed that Jason did not give her the financial security she thought he would. He also admits that he invested their mutual fund money into his band dream which sends Renee spinning.
Whitney attends dinner with one of the clients, Brett. He asks her about her upcoming wedding and as she is ready to answer, Chris gives her a call. She ignores the call of course. Meanwhile Ola wants to know when Whitney will show up to the meet up with his family. He expresses being tired of her doing this but she assures him she will make it. Whitney, her co-workers and Brett head to a club for a drink. Brett talks about how he just needed a getaway from his lover. Whitney attempts to tell Brett that she was supposed to be doing something wedding related that night but she realizes her co-worker, Prada is high and follows her to the bathroom. Prada admits she took some Molly and Whitney takes her home. On her way out of the club, Ola sends Whitney a text telling her it is too late to meet his family and to just go home.
Renee is drunk chile after spilling her marriage tea. She admits she can not breathe in her marriage and that it is not what she signed up for. Sondi takes Renee home because Ella wants to sleep with the bartender. She admits he would distract her from her ex, Anderson. Ella sleeps with the white bartender but his use of the word “cock” instead of “dick” runs her straight off. I feel you sis! Ella tells the girls the following day she ran out of the session which leads to them discussing white porn versus Black porn. Ella admits it was just odd sleeping with a white man and jokes about Harriet Tubman watching her. In the middle of the conversation, Whitney drops the bomb that she is not sure she should be getting married, much to the groups shock.
Takeaways:
Whitney is definitely career driven but I do not feel that is the problem. I think she spent too much time being committed to Ola and now she wants to explore singledom. A classic problem in these types of relationships.
Renee, girl! It’s giving Acrimony sis. I get the frustrations though.
