We open tonight with Whitney getting a tattoo like it’s the early 2000’s, according to Jason. Whitney explains to the tattoo artist that her ex did not like women with tattoos so she rebelled against his ideology.

The ladies have a workout session with Hope. They all update on Hope on what has been happening in their lives. Whitney is still running away from work, Renee is still in pursuit of the Lo’real deal by way of her friend Mia, and Sondi is preparing for a dinner with Naomi in hopes it will help them bond. The ladies are carrying some heavy loads.

Renee and Abby get together to discuss business and disagree on how to woo Mia in hopes of scoring Lo’real as a client. Abby presents a sign to Renee with both of their last names, of course Abby’s last name is first. Renee quickly responds that the sign really isn’t needed yet since they do not have an office which Abby suggests going after some smaller clients. However, Renee is steadfast on locking in Lo’real.

At the dinner with Mia, Abby falls flat on pitching ideas because in her mind, she needs to be under contract to discuss these things. Renee and Abby go to the bathroom and Abby admits getting Lo’real is a pipe dream. Renee breaks her partnership with Abby. Renee asks Mia honestly if the deal with Lo’real will happen and she tells her no. Mia encourages her to keep going and she respects her for going out on her own.

Professor Baptiste wants Sondi to become her Teacher’s Assistant for the summer session. Sondi needs to think it over since things are becoming a bit more challenging at home with the return of Naomi and Amari. When Sondi tells Matthew the news, he admits he was looking forward to them having a fun summer together.

Whitney gets a new hairstyle in hopes of getting her confidence back to head into work but it falls flat. Whitney calls her job and tells them she is still going to be working from home. She discusses her hesitation with Hope, and discovers her job called Hope for a wellness check. Whitney has always felt confident and secure at work but since the break up with Ola, things just have not been the same. Hope decides to take Whitney out on the town to lift her spirits.

At the dinner, Naomi thanks Sondi for everything she has done for Amari. She also tells Sondi now that she is back, she will not need to split her time the same way as before. Naomi seems to be hitting the gas completely on being a full time mom to Amari which seems to bother Sondi. Professor Baptiste calls Sondi to get her answer on becoming her TA — Sondi accepts the position.

Renee calls Jason and chews him up over a broken cabinet hinge, obviously taking the loss of the Lo’real deal out on him. Jason hangs up on her but makes an appearance at her place. He comes to makes sure she is okay and the conversation quickly turns into — “checking up on you” sex.

Sondi tells Matthew she picked up on what Naomi tried to insinuate at the dinner. Since her job with raising Amari is done, she wants to concentrate on finishing her degree. Matthew apologizes for being selfish about the TA position and gifts Sondi some books that he annotated to make her job a little easier.

Renee and Jason wake up together and she is interested in what Jason is up to for the summer. He tells her that he will be traveling to Atlanta which seems to disappoint Renee.

Abby sends Renee an apology email and gifts her a sign that says, ‘The Renee Ross Agency,” hopefully helping Renee realize she is making the best decision for herself.

Takeaways:

At this point, I/m not sure what is going to happen between Matthew and Sondi. Although I love them together, the return of Naomi and Sondi’s position with Professor Baptiste may do a number on their union.

I want Renee to win! I want her to win it all, BUT I need her to admit she did not properly support Jason the way he has emotionally supported her. Girl you know you still love that man — go get him!

Whitney’s transparency around going back to work was much appreciated. It’s okay to admit something dramatic happened to you and that you are not ready to face the world yet — let alone your job.
