The Chi Recap: Season 3 Episode 10 — A Couple, Two, Three
Columnist Bianca Gregg is here to provide all the details on tonight’s season finale of Showtime’s “The Chi.”
Welcome back for our final trip to The Chi for this season.
Tonight’s episode opens up with everyone gathered at church to say goodbye to Ronnie at his funeral service.
Some of you may have noticed the incredible singer and Instagram sensation Callie Day opening the service with her wide range performing the song that went viral last year and first gained her notoriety.
The families are gathered as Reverend Jackson delivers a eulogy that commemorates the good Ronnie did on Earth and his reunion with his beloved grandmother above. Tracy is presented with the flag and a thank you for Ronnie’s service in the military. Reverend Jackson asks everyone if they have any final words for Ronnie. The most riveting goodbye was given by Keisha. Holding a large bouquet of stunning red roses, she approaches Ronnie’s casket. She stands silent for a moment and places the roses over his casket. She whispers to Ronnie “Thank You,” fitting for her hero and symbolizing a life complete.
Everyone heads to Ronnie’s final resting place. Emmett catches up to Keisha who tells him that she is pregnant. Emmett asks Keisha what she wants to do but she is still undecided on what the future will hold for her pregnancy. A police car pulls up and two officers ask for Reverend Jackson. He is subsequently arrested right in front of everyone including his son, Poppa. Later it is revealed that Reverend Jackson was arrested for money laundering.
No surprise there.
Emmett and Tiffany head to a therapy session in preparation for their nuptials. The therapist asks them why they are in such a rush to be married and the running theme for Tiffany is that Emmett should have “been” married her. When they have a small disagreement in front of the counselor, she reminds them of how heavy a commitment marriage is, which rubs Tiffany the wrong way. The pair leave, unfazed by the information given.
Keisha talks to Jada about her pregnancy hoping to seek some clarity in what she should do. Jada tells her that whatever decision she makes will be the right decision. She also suggests someone else for Keisha to talk to. That person turns out to be Tiffany.
Tiffany opens up to Keisha about the abortion she had the previous year, we finally get our answer on what happened with her pregnancy. Tiffany tells Keisha to trust herself and the two share a hug. A beautiful moment in sisterhood.
Trig and Imani prepare for the custody hearing for Jake. Trig questions why Camille had not used the information that was given to her about Otis. Imani tells Trig that it does not matter now and she reassures him things will be fine. Trig admits he fears actually winning custody and being the head of his family. Imani reminds him that they will do it together, as a family.
At the custody hearing, Jake tells the judge he does not want to stay with Otis and that he would rather be with his brother. Otis does not come to the hearing and custody is rewarded to Trig. Later that day when Roselyn asks Otis why he did not come to the hearing, Otis responds with “Why own one brother when you can own two.”
Roselyn visits Camille to ask why she has not used the information given to her on Otis. Camille tells Roselyn she refuses to be a pawn in their game and that she did not desire to take Otis out in that way. Otis ultimately wins the mayoral race. Maybe Camille should have considered using the information. The following day, Otis goes to see Trig and promises to pay for Jake’s schooling if he agrees to work for him. He assures Trig will not have to worry about the police because he will be placing his personal security guard as the chief of police. Trig agrees, Otis now has both brothers in his pocket, as well as the city of Chicago.
Keisha is at the doctor’s office with her mother Nina. She realizes that she can not move forward with the abortion. She decides that she will carry her baby. She tells her mother that maybe this is all God’s plan and what if Ronnie’s mother had aborted him, where would she be? Later on Nina finally tells Kevin that Keisha is pregnant. Kevin is angered by the news that Keisha is pregnant by her abductor and that she plans on keeping the baby. He leaves in a rage. Kevin meets up with Jemma and she attempts to get Kevin to open up to her by telling him about her experiences with being suicidal and having a therapist. The two kiss and realize they are ready for the next step, sex.
Poppa, who has been questioning much of the things around him lately, is at church. He decides that he wants to confront his father about his arrest. Poppa asks his father if he is guilty and what he did with the money Camille had given him. Reverend Jackson tells Poppa he used the money to help people and to also help Poppa and his mother. He tells Poppa he would give the world to Poppa and his mother if he could. In a very poignant moment between father and son, Poppa tells his father he does not need the world, he just wants him. He also asks his father what type of man will he be? His father responds emotionally, “A better man than him.” The two hug.
It’s Tiffany and Emmett’s wedding day. Tiffany looks absolutely beautiful and Emmett looks handsome. They exchange vows in front of their family and a few friends. After the ceremony they enjoy their honeymoon and we see a montage of all of the characters. We see Maisha present Poppa with a “M” chain in return of Poppa gifting her a chain with a “P.” Absolutely adorable!
We see Jake, Trig and Imani enjoying family time while finally being united legally as a family. Kevin and Jemma share a sweet hug. Nina and Dre are smoking in their living room. Finally the couple appear happy as they dance the night away. Keisha is in her room laying down in thought. She sits up and the next day we see her suited up in her running gear. She has a run, alone. Keisha is healing, right in front of us. The beauty of life, in the midst of pain and loss, we can always count on life to give us opportunity to begin anew.
Takeaways:
I know I typically call this portion “Takeaways” but this is more reflective this week. As this season comes to a close, I have gained an appreciation for the direction this season went. We witnessed a lot of loss and pain but getting the chance to witness healing in real time was amazing. Not only was it the healing but the healing of a Black girl, the most unprotected group of human beings. Thank you Lena Waithe for giving us something that will stick for years to come.
Until next season, thank you for coming to The Chi.
