‘The Chi’ Season 4 Episode 1 ‘Soul Food’
Columnist Bianca Gregg is here to provide all the details on tonight’s episode of Showtime’s “The Chi.” As we follow our favorite characters from the beginning and get introduced to a few new faces, BALDWIN brings you our signature commentary and predictions each Sunday.
Tonight we quickly catch back up with all the characters. We begin with what appears to be a dream. We see Kevin running around what looks to be a basement area of a building. Keisha is having a water birth, Emmitt is staring into a bathroom mirror, Jemma and Jake are kissing and Otis is on a balcony where he is shot. We discover this is a flash forward to what will happen in about a month.
Kevin and Jemma are still together. Kevin has been sneaking into Jemma’s house to spend the night and on this morning they are caught by her father’s security cameras. Jemma, her father and Kevin have a brief talk about the police. Jemma feels all officers are bad while her father, of course, does not see it that way. Kevin remains pretty quiet. We later find out that seems to be an issue Jemma has with Kevin. He does not seem to take a stand on things and Jemma wants intelligent debate and conversation with him. Surprisingly she gets more of a reaction on certain topics from Jake.
Over at ‘Smokies,’ customers discuss Otis Perry’s shady background now that he is the mayor. Emmitt is living high off the success of his restaurant. He wants Tiffany to even call him boss when she comes to see him. She goes into the kitchen to ask Dom about her plug but Emmitt interrupts simply because he is scared the truth will be revealed. Emmitt’s father stops by to see Dom. The two of them are now dating each other. Dom decides to tell Darnell the truth about sleeping with Emmitt. Darnell does not care but he makes sure to let Emmitt know he is aware of the situation.
After school Jake and Emmitt head to a basketball game. On the way, Jake gets into a small scuffle with another kid. The police intervene requesting to see Jake and Kevin’s identification but when Jake refuses, the police officer body slams him and begins beating him. The other officer draws a gun on Kevin all while Maisha records the incident. The police arrest a bloody Jake.
Otis and Roselyn visit Tracy to extend support to her for the support group she has started in the city. At first, Tracy is skeptical of Otis but we quickly realize she may be a little smitten by him.
Kevin is having a hard time processing the incident with the police. He demands that Poppa and Maisha not release the footage of the incident. When he gets home, his mother and Dre ask him what happened and he simply says, the police. Keisha goes to speak to him and encourages him to have a conversation with Jake so he does not guilt himself into feeling worse.
A very pregnant Keisha and Nina go to visit the couple that is supposed to be adopting the baby. Keisha quickly picks up on some rockiness between the couple. Later that day she expresses to Nina and Dre that she is unsure about letting her baby grow up with the couple because their household seems sad. The following day the wife, played by Tabitha Brown, visits Keisha and decides to be honest with her about the state of her marriage. Octavia tells Keisha she and her husband will be getting a divorce and that regardless she always wanted to be a mother. Keisha appreciates the information but tells Octavia that she wants her child adopted by someone that can provide a two parent home to the baby.
When Trigg and Otis find out a bout what has happened to Jake, they race to the hospital. Trigg puts pressure on Otis to do something about the officer that beat Jake up. Otis vows to fix the situation, he is clearly shaken by the events. The following day, Kevin goes to visit Jake. They have a heated exchange about what went down. Jake expected more from Kevin.
That night, Trigg and Imani wait under an overpass to clearly set someone up. Trigg is masked up and Imani signals to him that the person he wants is coming by. Trigg hops out on the jogger and begins to beat him with his gun. It’s the officer that assaulted Jake.
