Tonight’s episode of ‘The Chi’ gave me a heavy dose of anxiety.

I would like to start off talking about the love triangle between Kevin, Jake and Jemma. Although Kevin made an effort to talk to Jemma about preparation for Otis Perry’s gala, she seemed particularly dry about it. She did not seem to care about what Kevin would wear or him impressing her father. When she gets off the phone with Kevin, she is with Jake. Seems like their relationship is already full blown at this point. Jake gives Jemma an ultimatum that she must tell Kevin that she does not want to be with him otherwise he will tell Kevin himself. Of course no one tells Kevin anything but he begins to pick up on their strange behaviors, especially at the gala. Jake and Jemma immediately couple up and leave Kevin alone to wonder around the gala with the other guests.

During Tracy’s speech at the gala, Jake leaves the table they are all seated at. Jemma goes after him and asks him where he is going. Jake feels like he is only at the gala because of his run in with the police and wants to leave. Jemma tries to get Jake to want to stay but eventually gives into the thought of leaving. Kevin walks around the building trying to find the pair and stumbles upon them in a stairwell kissing. Kevin, clearly in deep pain, storms off and leaves the gala in a rage.

Jada and Dre are still keeping the truth of their relationship from Nina. Dre feels she needs to tell Nina what is going on but Jada wants to take her time revealing her diagnose to Nina. She does not want people feeling sorry for her. Nina of course has grown suspicious of the situation and has a lot of questions for Dre.

Meanwhile Jada is still dealing with helping Emmitt cope with the news. The mother and son have a heart to heart conversation where Jada expresses how proud she is of Emmitt. Emmitt wants to try to do everything in his power to heal his mother but she reminds him that it is not his job. Suede is taking amazing care of Jada and tells her that he is indeed in love with her. She thanks him for everything that he has done for her and replies by saying that is his job.

Imani gets serious with Trig about Rashad needing to move out of their place. Rashad had an exchange with Imani when she offers to help him with his tie for an interview he was going on. Bothered by his response, she let’s Trig know he must go.

Rashad’s interview does not go well. In the beginning it seems the interviewer was connecting with him because Rashad is related to a family he knows from the neighborhood however, once Rashad tells him that he went to prison the tone changes. The interviewer tells Rashad the decision to hire is not up to him and he will pass his resume along. Rashad storms out of his office and admits his frustration to Trig.

Trig takes Rashad out for a drink and a game of pool. He tells him that he has to move out of his place by the weekend due to his interactions with Imani. Rashad proceeds to disrespect Imani by calling her an “It” as well as asking Trig if he is gay. Trig stands on what he says and tells Rashad that Imani means more to him than he does.

Keisha meets a new coworker that seems to be very kind and relates a bit to her situation. He had a scholarship to play sports in college but got hurt. He also tells Keisha he knows what happened to her and is happy that she survived. While at work, what Keisha thought was just Braxton Hicks contractions turns out to be actual labor. She is rushed home to have her natural water birth. She is surrounded by loved ones including Octavia. In deep pain, Keisha expresses that she feels she can not do this but everyone tells her that she is doing it. Just like that the baby is born. Keisha holds the baby for a moment and then the baby is given to a teary eyed Octavia.

Back at the gala, Otis is riding high on hopes of securing the Olympic games in Chicago. Tracy gives a beautiful speech on why she started R.O.C.K and that she feels the community will be able to prove that they can police themselves and create a safer environment for Chicago youth without the worry of the police. Otis is up and he gives his bid on why the games should be in Chicago. He cites that they are the first major city to defund the police and set the example for how policing their own neighborhoods could be done.

Riding high off the gala turn out, Otis asks Tracy to meet him on the roof. She accepts his invitation. On the roof, Otis is looking at the city and turns around to see someone on the balcony with him. A gun is drawn and Otis is shot.

Later that night, Darnell goes to see Emmitt. In the living room clearly bothered, he tells Darnell that he had just got back from seeing his mother. When Darnell asks who she’s doing, Emmitt snaps and says to him that now he cares about what is going on with her. Emmitt tells Darnell to leave and rushes up the stairs to the bathroom. Darnell goes after his son. He stands by the bathroom door and tells Emmitt he is not going anywhere. Emmitt comes out and collapses into his father’s arms. He tells Darnell that Jada is sick.

Takeaways:

So much happened in this single episode. Am I crazy to be concerned for Imani? Rashad just seems angry and considering how he sees Imani, I am scared for her.

I kind of wonder if Keisha will stick with the adoption. I can see where she often goes back and forth with the idea of being a mother but doing what she feels is right.

Jemma and Jake had no remorse for Kevin and man do I feel for Kevin. I hate that he found out about them the way he did.

Who shot Otis? I’m thinking Roslynn. It’s being set for us to think Tracy though but why would she want to kill him.

I am not ready for watching Jada suffer through cancer and watching Emmitt potentially lose his mother. I am not ready for it! Lena you better turn it around because NO!
