Youth Coach Showing Kids a Better Way

Alvoid Gates has been a volunteer youth sports coach in Macon, Ga. for the past six years. Given that he had somewhat of a troubled past as a youth, Gates decided to start coaching so that he could mentor kids and serve as a positive role model in hopes of steering them in the right direction. He states “growing up in South Macon, I know how easy it is to get involved with the street life if you don’t have positive outlets to turn to. I just don’t want kids to make the same mistakes that I made” when asked about his involvement in youth sports as well as in the community.

In 2014, Gates created the Coach Void Athletic Academic Achieving Award. The award recognizes kids that excel academically and athletically. More specific, it highlights kids with high grade point averages (GPA) and kids that display good sportsmanship on the athletic fields. Additionally, Gates’ future goals are to start doing food, toy, and school supply drives with the youth to show them the value of helping those that are less fortunate.

NOTEWORTHY: Gates credits the following people for mentoring and helping him turn his life around — Tina Dannard, Issac Lightfoot, Jimi Davis, Ervin josey, and Bernard Riley.
