If you’re in Juneau and are looking for a good cup of coffee, let me spare you the search and the random bad cup and point you to two coffee shops that I’m sure you’ll enjoy.

Juneau, view from Douglas Island

I’m not choosing just one place because there are two good options in downtown that you can choose from whether you want a dark roast or a lighter roast coffee.

Heritage Coffee

They have seven locations around Juneau with one bigger cafe where you can grab some food as well. The coffee is on the darker side but fresh and flavorful (they are a roaster as well, so that definitely helps) although the milk lacked consistency, the texture varied a lot between the cups that I got.

It’s good cup of coffee for a small town, but after reading their history on the website and how much they invest in getting the right beans, the experience was a bit disappointing.

Cappuccino from Heritage Coffee

I ended up getting a bag of coffee from them as well with Kenya beans that were supposed to be a light roast. When I got home and opened the bag I was surprised to find that the beans were a dark roast, dark enough that the oils from the coffee bean were showing up on the surface. Either the bag was mislabeled or we have a very different definition of light roast then they do.

Roast: Dark Roast

Locations: They have seven locations around Juneau, including the Glacier Cafe where you can get some pretty good food. For up to date information and all the addresses check out their website.

The Grind Coffee Co.

This little coffee shop was a great surprise for me. It’s in a very touristy place and I was expecting to just get decent coffee that just coasts on the fact that it’s exactly in front of the cruise ship dock and the Mt. Roberts Tramway.

The Grind Coffee Co. (The location on S Franklin St.)

In most of the small towns I’ve been in the only coffee you can find is a dark roast, and that’s to be expected, it’s the most popular and familiar and when your audience is smaller you have to choose something that will bring the most people in. Juneau is an exception because of this little coffee shop. The coffee was a medium roast, much lighter than what I had at Heritage Coffee. The steamed milk for the cappuccino was also smoother.

Website: No website (there is a link but their domain has expired so it’s unreachable).

Roast: Medium

Location: The easiest one to find is the one next to the Cruise Ship terminal. It’s a little walk-up window next to a knick knack store on Franklin St.

The others

There are a few other places that have coffee on the menu, but out of the ones that I’ve tried there are none that I would recommend other than the two above.

We all loved the Sandpiper Cafe for breakfast but it’s definitely worth taking a walk afterward to get coffee from either Heritage Coffee or The Grind Coffee Co.

For a non-caffeinated drink, if you’re over 21, check out The Narrows. This is a very cool little bar with amazing drinks with really fresh ingredients.

If you gave any of these places a try, let me know what you think in a comment bellow. Enjoy!
