The Magazine on Medium

We’re happy to meet you. We’re eager to share.

The Magazine is an ad-free, subscriber-supported fortnightly collection of original, commissioned reporting and essays that just celebrated its first anniversary. We’re delighted to be contributing to Medium every weekday starting today with our feature, “On the Internet, Everybody Knows You’re a Dog,” which looks at a classic comic, now 20 years old, and the irony of our current lack of privacy; and Scott Simpson’s essay, “You Are Boring,” one of the most-appreciated pieces we’ve published.

We will be bringing some archived and new work to share here, but mostly offering new stories from our contributors, who are located around the world. The thread that connects them and us to you is curiosity. We are fascinated by what we find around us, and want to share the stories of people who make things as well as how things work.

The discoveries of Derham Giuliani by Olivia Warnecke

We like 60-foot-tall lava lamps and typewriters; tablet computers and abacuses; the history of writing and butterflies hidden in the mountains of Southern California; the aches of an aging body and the joys of nudism; the pleasure of synesthesia and the sensation of driving a robot on Mars; the rediscovery of an old videogame and the smell of letterpress ink as as print comes off a press.

We hire freelance writers, photographers, illustrators, and editors and produce that most old-fashioned of things, an issue, every other Thursday. It’s five (sometimes more) medium-length features, roughly 1,500 to 2,500 words long, about people you will like to meet and subjects we think you will find of interest.

Every weekday on Medium, we’ll be publishing stories, sometimes illustrating aspects of longer tales; other times, snapshots and gems. Let us know the stories you’d like to hear that you can’t find elsewhere.

Medium has given us a great home to share more frequently, and we’re glad to be here.

Subscribing

We think of our subscribers like patrons, and we don’t mean to be pretentious. We are a small and independent publication, and subscription revenue goes to pay the freelance contributors, artists, and editors. Every subscription is a vote for us to create more of what you like.

If you’d like to find out more about the full-length publication, we have a custom iOS app for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad that we think makes it as easy to read on those devices as Medium does in a Web browser. You can also read via our Web site in mobile and desktop browsers.

We offer a 7-day free trial, and then charge $1.99 per month, which includes two issues and 10 or more articles; a year is $19.99 (16% savings) for a full 26 issues and a whopping 130+ articles. (We also make it a breeze to cancel.) A single subscription provides access via the Web and our iOS app to the current and all back issues and articles.
