When you think about Wellness, what comes to mind?

For me, it was the mind and body together, to achieve my highest self. Like when Goku went Super Saiyan 2.

Did you know there are 7 dimensions of wellness?
It’s okay, I didn’t either.

These seven dimensions include:

  • Physical
  • Emotional
  • Spiritual
  • Intellectual
  • Social
  • Environmental
  • Occupational

Our wellness and quality of life depend on every single dimension. There might be times, where one is more prominent than others, but remember to never neglect any dimension for too long. With that said, we’ll dive into the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of wellness for the African-American community.

THE MIND

According to John Hopkins, “The brain controls your ability to think, talk, feel, see, hear, remember things, walk and much more. It even controls your breathing.” As a community, mental health has continued rising, as we face societal inequality, racial bias, and mental instability from conforming to this country, “they” call great. Take a look at the data below:

“Even before COVID-19, Black Americans were 20 percent more likely to experience mental health issues. Yet, Black patients are less likely than their White peers to use necessary mental health resources, such as therapy, counseling, and psychiatric care.” — (Health Affairs, Victor Agbafe, William R. Boles Rebekah E. Gee).

If it was 20 percent before COVID, I can’t imagine what it would be like now. The disparities in mental health issues show the miseducation and lack of visibility that health organizations provide to the Black community. Just like money, jobs, and housing opportunities, the black community always seems to get the short end of the stick. With this in mind, I’d like to empower and encourage my community to start actively taking steps to gain back our mental health/power.

BODY

Being healthy is critical to overall happiness, well-being, and longevity on this earth. As we focus on our mind and body, it gives us a better chance of living a life of growth, internal happiness, and economic progression.

Nutrition is proven to help with weight management, chronic diseases, strengthening our immune system, and supporting our mental health. Remember the saying, “You are, what you eat?” I challenge us to start eating healthier if we are able. Due to social economics, that involve food deserts or more, I know that’s not always realistic

Physical Activity — “Regular physical activity can help keep your thinking, learning, and judgment skills sharp as you age. It can also reduce your risk of depression and anxiety and help you sleep better” (CDC).

Recovery — Make sure to take some time for yourself. Try yoga, light stretching, or even having a SPA day.

SOUL

Lastly, my people, please, please, please, try fasting. Connecting with your soul is the essence of who you are. The ability to sync with our inner-being can lead to more than what the eye can see. There will be days when your mind runs wild and wants to control you. Allow your consciousness to break through and get a grasp of life. This life is more than the mind, body, and flesh. Our inner-being is how we grasp our power back.

Our ancestors who walked the continent of Africa were able to connect with this earth in more ways than we can think. It is not about what our eyes can fix on. It’s about what our eyes cannot see, the unknown. I challenge you all to fast, pray, meditate, and become that Tree that won’t get blown away from any wind, hurricane, tornado, or storm. Take a look below at the importance of fasting:

“Spiritual fasting is not about denying yourself what you need. Instead, it is about managing your needs in order to orient yourself toward something greater than yourself.” ((Healthy Hildegrad)

“The goal is to focus on your faith and spiritual health. Hunger is easily remedied. Your spiritual wellness often requires a longer view. Spiritual fasting is a way to open yourself up for introspection.” (Healthy Hildegrad)

I want you to think about spiritual clarity, soul cleansing, renewed faith, abundant energy, attuned to the world, and transcendent empowerment.

Deep Meditation

I love every one of you. I might not know you personally, but I show gratitude for taking the time to read this article. It takes a lot of self-reflection, persistence, and discipline to change your reality. It won’t be easy, but I know you can do it. Show love to yourself, show love to others, and protect your energy. I pray, 2021 comes with many Blessings. Peace.
