The memory is as clear as day, if I close my eyes I can picture my school English teacher reading out the luscious lines from ‘Hour’ by Carol Ann Duffy and feeling utterly mesmerised, as I hung onto every word.

So mesmerised at the time in fact, that I would go on to write my own version of ‘Hour’.

If I knew where this was, and had a chance to read it I probably wouldn’t be able to stop cringing, but that’s not the point. The impression was made and the lifelong reader bug was caught.

All this came to a head at the end of 2023, when I bumped into my old English teacher when I was working at an event that she happened to be attending.

Funnily enough, I soon learned that my then-boss was in the same class as my teacher at school. All the paths that could be crossed were crossed and it led me to think about how much teachers can influence you in early life and what makes people want to read in the first place — and keep reading.

Never underestimate the power of a teacher
