This is the third in a series of articles chronicling our 13-day, 2005 family vacation, with Steve (author), my wife, Janet, and our two teenage sons, Kevin and Michael. Though part of a series, it can be read and appreciated as a standalone. Click here to go to previous (Day 2) article. The complete Index of articles, with active links, can be found at the end of this article. As articles are published, they will be added to the Index and their links activated.

Recap: Having safely arrived in Paris the day before, we spent that first day settling in and orienting ourselves to the immediate area surrounding our hotel, the Beaubourg (Notre Dame, Pompidou Center, the Louvre). Now we were ready to explore further. But never anticipated the setback that would totally alter our plans for the coming weekend!

Paris, France

Tuesday, August 9

U p at 9 AM, we took breakfast at a nearby café. Jan and I settled for a petit dejeuner, croissants and coffee, but the boys wanted something a little heartier — an “American breakfast:” fried eggs (Kevin) and omelets (Mike).
