Is it possible to live forever? To a select group of people, it may certainly feel like it. In certain parts of the world, the elders are challenging the mainstream idea of what it means to grow old and it’s not quite synonymous with absolute pain, misery, and deterioration.

Many of these people come from regions known as “Blue Zones,” which are the places in the world where people seem to forget to die. The highest number of centenarians come from five areas in the world, which are Okinawa (Japan), Sardinia (Italy), Ikaria (Greece), the Nicoya Peninsula (Costa Rica), and Loma Linda (the United States). Researchers and many other people have become very curious to know what is so special about these places and why the people living in them tend to outlive the rest of the world.

Some people say it’s because of their diet. The foods people typically consume in Blue Zones are often meals that are made from scratch and many of their staple foods are plant-based. Because of this, some people have used Blue Zones as an example to justify why plant-based diets are superior in comparison to other ways of eating.
