My personal reflection about learning Slam Poetry
There is a competitive spoken performance which we called Slam Poetry. I learned it form Dr. Mora, which tends to be very powerful expressions of ideas, feelings and emotions through the medium of writing and performance, also we can make it more interesting with our creativity.
Slam poetry has a process of writing, drafting, editing and performing, which is the vital part that gives power to your words. I thought it could be easy but I was wrong. My biggest challenge was finding the motivation to start writing, because most people had written about something that they have exactly faced, or writing about something they believed in.
First of all I need to identify the topic that I want to write. It is all about our attitudes in facing life. I think the positive attitude lead me to have new hope and vision for my life. Then write down what I see, hear, taste, touch, and smell when I think about my topic. Craft words into sentences that lend me in a natural way to express. When editing, read the poem out loud. It helps me to realize where I did well and where I need to change for a better performance.
For me, making slam poetry was not simple for I had met difficulties, but I also found it was very interesting that at the end, I was able to create my own poem or words expressing my soul and making a video to share with more people. The presentation part inside the whole class was very enjoyable. We presented to each other, and it was interesting to see how everybody wrote their own poem, and what techniques they had included to make it unique. This activity encourages all of us to be more confident about ourselves. I want to say congratulations to all, because we did a very nice job. I felt that I could really get into this slam poetry assignment by using both my voice and love for expressing myself as how I am.
All in all this assignment was great. It allowed us to have opportunity to learn from others and to be learned by others. I will never forget the creativity in poems and I found many benefits from this experience and it is very much encouraged for the future.
As a future teacher, I think we can bring the slam culture to our school and classroom for learners enjoy a class. And it is a fantastic way to introduce an idea, spark off a discussion and inspire writing. Spoken word poetry is all about original writing and innovation. If you wish children become writers, then they must become better readers first. If they can express themselves through writing poems then their ability of analyzing and discussing the work of others is developed. Writing is a form of self-expression, people have kept diaries, written songs and poetry for thousands of years. Slam is just another part of the tradition. It is not new, but to kids, it looks different and cool.
Slam poetry is a way of getting creative writing into your class, and giving students the chance to get excited about poetry. Anything that we can do to achieve these things is worth a try. If you did not make it yet, try it now.
