The Mayhem Takes a New Direction Toward Opinion-Based Pieces
Bernice P. Debuts New Film Column!
Hi friends!
The Mayhem has been a bit of an enigma around The Tranquil Tavern — we’ve had a hard time keeping it afloat with the few different holes we’ve tried to stuff our square peg into.
The closest we came was when it was running as a fiction pub — it did great, but only had a few consistent writers and never picked up too far off the ground. We loved the idea of The Mayhem so wanted to keep trying.
A humor pub was our next stop. The problem with humor is, we have so many friends already in the humor space — even we write in those pubs — and frankly, those publications already do it so well. We don’t need to be there in the mix competing.
Christopher Robin and I would come back to the “what to do with The Mayhem?” question every so often — but one thing was very clear. Our publications are all nonfiction related. All of them. That is what we do and what we do best. That is why The Mayhem is a square peg. Its material should be nonfiction-related like the rest of our publications.
So what are we missing? Let’s go down the list.
- The Memoirist. Memoirs
- Age of Empathy. Personal essays.
- QuickTalk. About writers and writing.
- Songstories (yes, it’s back!). Music memoirs and essays.
- Black Bear. Mental health.
What we landed on were opinion essays. Opinion pieces of any style, whether humorous or serious. And The Mayhem will remain an exclusive publication — invite only or via email pitch — to provide high-quality opinion content.
I’m interested in a similar format as we have on QuickTalk, with a variety of recurring columns. And we have our first one!
