The best leaders are consistent — cool and calm under pressure without cracking or overreacting. They’re intentional about building, first their core and then on the thousands of nuances that make them distinct.

Recently, I practiced with a team asked to define the difference between ‘react’ and ‘respond’. The difference is not just a nuance- it’s a game-changer, and if you lead anything it’s important you understand why. While it’s nice to see yourself all cool and calm when sh*t hits the fan, what matters more is how others see you. Why? Because you don’t have to look at yourself all day — other people do.

So, for those of you who invest and are blessed with the gift of team practice, stop showing up unprepared with nowhere to go. Come with a dose of courage and seek feedback that will make you better. Ask your team to tell you the truth about how they view and experience you under pressure. Don’t settle if they toss you a softball and claim they never see you get stressed. Instead, give them permission to share an insight that might sting, even if that means revealing something you didn’t know was a thing.

Prepare in advance and preload your response. Maintain your composure and remain calm. Absorb the feedback and create space for reflection post practice. Then you can decide if you want to do anything with it.

It’s always your choice, and you know what that means…
