Everyone didn’t see the joke

Imagine the scene. I was 23 and working in the claims department of an insurance company. Cubicles were all around me. Surely over 100 cubicles in this enormous room, with mine around the middle. Nothing special at all.

Paying medical claims at that time required a lot of data input. It was far less automated than it is today. Long hospital bills, doctor’s visits, surgeries, prescription drugs. Almost every item had its own separate line, or was grouped together and added, and added again, by a calculator, before it was input.

I didn’t hate the job by any means. In fact, I rather liked it. My prior job had been as a housemother for 15–16-year-old boys. I didn’t hate that job either, but it was not a healthy long-term career for me and the drama was exhausting. There wasn’t much drama in the claims department.

My friend Allison worked in the cubicle beside me. We both did our jobs well but would get a bit bored during the long days, so we would tell each other stories. Allison’s were mostly true. Mine were too unless I was talking about my wedding. I did that a lot.
