I woke up to a silent home. My kids were still asleep, and my boyfriend was gone. Maybe he was getting me a last-minute gift since today was my birthday.

I wasn’t sure what we were doing for my birthday yet. I tried making plans with my boyfriend weeks ago, but my efforts to schedule something annoyed him. Eventually, I gave up and assumed we’d just figure out something on my actual birthday.

“Maybe he’s planning a surprise party for you,” my friend said, trying to defend him.

“Yeah right,” I replied. My boyfriend wasn’t a planner. I was the one who scheduled his dental appointments and reminded him to get his oil changed. A surprise party would be fun, but I knew he’d never plan something like that for me. Well, at least not to make me happy.

My boyfriend did things that benefitted himself, not others. He’d throw me a party if it would impress his family and friends, but most of them hated me. At least that’s what my boyfriend said. I believed him because I didn’t know what triangulation was yet.

Narcissists love using triangulation to create drama and make you feel alone. Narcissists also love ruining birthdays. I know this because I was raised by one…
