Spending Time With Grampy Taught Me Powerful Lessons in Love

I’ve never believed in traditional guardian angels.

I’m not a religious person, and the idea of some entity looking over me and my life doesn’t fit with my perspective of the world.

And yet, ever since I was a small child, I have felt a certain kind of protection. A trust in the cosmos. A knowledge that, no matter how frightening or confusing the world may become, I am not alone in facing the storms unaccompanied.

And I know I have one person to thank for that. A person who played a major role in my life for the time he lived on this earth. My paternal grandfather — my Grampy.

At this time of year, thoughts of Grampy are always present in my mind. September was his birthday month, and my family would get over to Grampy and Granny’s for a weekend in early September to celebrate with them.

We often had warm weather and would get to spend time outside, flying kites or heading to the coast to make the most of the last of summer’s heat. Grampy would always have this sense of wonder about him, especially at this time of year. I often contemplated what he may have been thinking — perhaps it was the fact that he had lived to…
