Turning Back Time
Reconnecting with a forgotten childhood friend
I don’t recall much of being five years old. Who does when it was over half a century ago?
The one thing I do remember is going to Kindergarten. The facility wasn’t far from my home and years later, I still have vivid memories of its interior.
I wonder if it was because I had witnessed my two older siblings heading there and couldn’t wait to attend pre-school myself? I was the baby after all. It looked so welcoming, inviting and fun!
For some reason, the upstairs life-size dollhouse has lodged itself in my brain. There was a play kitchen, and cribs for baby dolls. The stairs seemingly have more significance and I’ve no idea why. They still stand out from those days half a century ago.
The pictures I recently dredged up from an old album personified the memory. Me and my buddy, Brent, on our first day at kindy (lead picture). It must've been in 1970 or 1971. His mum and mine were friendly from church.
I have vague recollections of Brent being referred to as my first boyfriend. Innocent friendships because of parental connections. He was often at our house and because we were of similar age, the label was made.
