The rise of a Legend

Pelé was a famous Brazilian soccer player. He was known for his speed, agility, and extraordinary ability to jump and control the ball. In 1,363 games, he scored 1,281 goals.

A poor farmer’s son, born on October 23, 1940, in Três Coraçes, Brasil. His real name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento Pelé was a moniker he acquired along the road.

Pelé picked up the game from his dad. Pelé dropped out of school to focus on his career. He started coaching at the age of 11.

Pelé’s Successes

Pelé debuted in 1956. He played football for Santos in Brazil. As captain of Santos, he earned many championships and records. He played till the 1974 season ended.

Pelé won three FIFA World Cups with the Brazilian national team. It was in 1958, when he was 17 and a half. He astonished the world by scoring six goals, two in the final, and became one of the most famous athletes ever. Pelé aided the Brazilian national teams in 1962 and 1970.

With his electrifying style of play and passion for spectacular goals, Pelé became a global phenomenon. For Santos, his team went on a globe tour. There was a 48-hour ceasefire in 1967 to allow the renowned player and his team to visit Nigeria.

However, the North American Soccer League signed Pelé to a $7 million contract in 1975, notwithstanding his retirement statement in 1974. In 1977, he retired after leading the Cosmos to the title.

Pelé received the IPS in 1978. As Athlete of the Century in 1980, and again in 1999, he was chosen by L’Equipe and the IOC. In 2014, Santos, Brazil, opened the Pelé Museum. He also published best-selling autobiographies and starred in numerous documentaries and semi-documentaries that were critically acclaimed. He was also a prolific composer who helped write the film’s score.

Pelé’s Significance

Edson Arantes do Nascimento debuted for Brazil as a 16-year-old. Then, in the final, he scored two more goals to help France beat Sweden 5–0. He was thereafter proclaimed a national treasure by Brazil’s government.

Pelé became a household name worldwide thanks to his electrifying performances and amazing goals. Brazil won three football (soccer) World Cups under his direction (1958, 1962, and 1970). He scored 12 goals in 12 World Cup appearances and almost 1,000 goals in top-flight competitions overall.
