GM

Half a year into crypto winter, things aren’t great. Charts and engagement are at all-time lows. I’d expect morale to be low. And yet…

People keep showing up! Twitter continues to be the daily meeting square for the NFT community.

There’s less talk about floor price and upcoming projects to jump into and flip (ew).

There are more meaningful conversations and (dare I say) patience with the market. Those who stuck around seem not to be fazed. Quality community is a norm.

What’s happening?

It’s fair to say that most of the NFT community has become well-informed, and the longevity of projects and communities has strengthened the bonds.

But I think there’s something else.

GM

Everywhere you go on Twitter, you come across it. Gm. GM! Gmmmmm!

Gm stands for “good morning.”

It doesn’t matter the actual time. In a global community with a lack of interest in doing time-zone math, Gm is always acceptable.

Originally, Gm was a morning greeting. Now it’s informally used as a general hello.

Why?

In short: we’re social af. We like to be recognized and welcomed. It feels good to be greeted by different people every morning. It also feels good to say it back. It’s an easy yet conscious effort to ping and connect with someone.

It’s a fun reminder that each person is a fully independent entity. There are people with unique lives behind these Jpegs.

No, you don’t need to respond to every Gm you receive or come across. Please don’t take on that pressure. It’s appreciated, not required.

The overwhelming GMs have become a meme, but I enjoy and appreciate it. I think the daily opportunity to connect with each other might be an explanation behind our endurance as a community in this bear market.

Like a small town, Web3 is a small community. We recognize each other and say hi when we see each other, a good sign of a tight-knit community.

GM!

Necessary mention: Twitter and socialization are both addicting. The engagement and notification dopamine from such a low-effort behavior is no surprise. Be mindful.
