The Daily Maybe #15: Commuter’s Song
I like trains.
This is the post that inspired today’s post.
I wake up excited,
Then check my phone.
Now I’m less delighted;
I might be staying home.
Plans have been cut,
My morning’s now free;
My whole day’s in a rut
I don’t know what to do with me.
This is 10am.
Message the boy,
He comes thru!
We excitedly make plans
And arrange to meet at 2.
With my evening still intact,
And my afternoon now secure,
I dash for the tracks
Hoping to beat the train doors.
This is 12:30pm.
I catch the train in a dash,
And hastily make for a seat.
I comfortably sprawl and crash
As I sigh and rest my feet.
I’ve missed the train’s green and grey,
So take it in, all cozy and warm.
There’s a smell here that seems astray;
Is… is that popcorn?
This is 1:12pm.
I reach the city
And walk out into the sun.
The blaring of horns
Marks that my journey’s just begun.
As I sit in the Square
Awaiting my friend’s arrival,
I gaze at the water feature;
So calm, yet so tidal.
This is 2:16pm.
An iced coffee soon follows,
To keep me wide awake.
We window-shop for an hour,
And leave with a decent take.
After more friends and adventures
And an exciting discovery,
We later head to a new coffee shop
For a caffeinated recovery.
This is 5:42pm.
I await my train home,
My phone dangerously close to death.
I’m warm, sweaty, tired
And still have that coffee on my breath.
Though I managed to skip rush hour,
My train’s still bloody packed.
I sink into my seat,
Wondering what my aesthetic might lack.
This is 7:13pm.
I reach home safe and sound,
Walking in to the smell of my dinner.
I unfold my shopping, pull out my phone
And step towards the mirror.
A shower later, I eat, feeling the pull of sleep
And about the day’s ventures, I boast.
We laugh, we smile, I write for a while
And so ends today’s blog post.
This is the Commuter’s Song.
🍉 Not much need for a daily catchup today; that was the post!
Though not quite a ballad as the inspiration cited at the start, today’s post was something I’ve been looking forward to writing since I read Ballad of a Coffee Drinker a couple days ago. Figured I’d kill two birds with one stone: get my daily blog done, while also getting back into some poetry — it’s been a while!
Today I ventured to downtown Toronto for the first time since the semester ended. It was a fun day, and the weather was beautiful.
I do hope you enjoyed the different style of post, dear Reader. I intend to do an actual ballad post later on, but not for a commute.
Till next we meet,
Sarim
