Zenit Turns 90…

This week is a jubilant one for football fans from The Venice of the North. Zenit Saint Petersburg is celebrating its 90th birthday, making it one of Russia’s oldest football clubs. What is today’s Zenit was formed in 1925 as a team of Saint Petersburg’s metal plant, and in 1936 they became part of a sports society called Zenit, hence they changed the name of the club to reflect the new organizational circumstances.

The club was fairly successful, though always in the shadow of the Iron Curtain greats like Dinamo Kiev and Spartak Moscow. However, early 2000’s was the era in which the future Russian and European giant rose to the occasion. Gazprom, one of world’s wealthiest companies, became the club’s main sponsor and from there, the only way for the club was up.
