5 Things People Love To Hear From Their Boss

The dimly lit ballroom seemed to brighten when the well-loved employee who’d given 45 years to the company walked to the podium to give his retirement speech. He was a loved leader. Not one for elaborate speeches, he thanked a few people and shared just one bit of leadership wisdom he received decades prior from his old boss…
“Just get out of your people’s way.”
This simple statement may not sound profound, but it was an attitude that led to a thriving and positive work environment for years.
I’ve studied and practiced leadership for over twenty years in business, volunteer, and military environments. Here are a few things I’ve seen that people love to hear from their boss.
1. Nothing.
Some bosses think leadership necessarily means actively directing, but the best leaders know sometimes people just need the boss out of the way.
Sometimes people do need a leader to be directing though. Leaders don’t treat everyone the same in this way. They see where someone is and adapt themselves to best guide people to where they need to go, always striving to teach people to do things for themselves with confidence.
