An Aide for Military Research and Writing

One of the more challenging aspects of being a military writer is researching your topic. There are a lot of different journals and blogs out there, but there is no easy way to quickly search through all the journals and blogs for relevant content. This has always been particularly frustrating for me because as a graduate student in the life sciences I became accustomed to the power of PubMed, which is the “Google” for quickly searching through nearly all literature relevant to life science research.

In an amateur attempt to create such a resource for military and national security writers, I have created a Google Custom Search to search through military journals and blogs. [Or a separate one for searching only the journals if you prefer.]

So far, this search engine will search the following journals and blogs…

Journals:

Air and Space Power Journal

Armed Forces Journal

Armor Magazine

Army Chemical Review

Army History Magazine

Army Magazine

Army Sustainment Magazine

Foreign Area Officer Association Journal

Infantry Magazine

Interagency Journal

Joint Forces Quarterly

Journal of Strategic Studies

Marine Corps Gazette

Military Review

Naval War College Review

Parameters

PRISM

Small Wars Journal

Strategic Studies Quarterly

The Strategy Bridge

Blogs:

Defense-in-Depth

From the Green Notebook

Logistics in War

The Military Leader

Think Defense

This list and the search engine will continue to grow and evolve over time and I invite others to help throughout the process. To recommend new journals or blogs to be added to this search engine, leave a response below and I’ll review the request ASAP.

I created this custom search in 2016 while conducting research for an article I was writing at the time and I hope by sharing it here, others will benefit from it as well.
