Navigating an alternative career in the digital age

As the gig economy booms, we can expect the same from alternative careers. According to a recent Freelance Union and Upwork study, 1 in 3 people in the United States workforce freelance. Additionally, a slightly higher percentage — 38 percent — of working millennials also freelance. Compared to their older counterparts, millennials were the first generation to choose freelancing over a traditional 9-to-5 job.

My name is Danielle Corcione and I’m 23 years old. For four years, I wrote for free because I truly believed no one would pay me to write. Fortunately, I was wrong. So, so, so wrong. After working full-time at a community newspaper and an email marketing firm, I’m a full-time freelance writer and editor.

I founded this blog, The Millennial Freelancer, to fulfill the lack of resources available for younger freelancers, particularly those interested in social justice, technology, digital publishing, and social journalism. The site aims to help beginners and tailored professionals alike.

I also write about freelancing frequently for places like The Freelancer by Contently, The Write Life, and The Billfold, so I plan to share some insider knowledge as well.

TMF’s current focus is on interviews with successful millennial freelancers. How did they do it? By learning what worked for these successful freelancers, you can learn more about the industry.
