COP22 or COP2000, what’s the difference
As the COP22 approaches, you can’t help but notice everyone getting ready for it and at the same time not caring about it. Confusing I know. I see it everywhere, since I live in the country where it is to be held, on national television, taxis, walls, ad panels, newspapers… The whole world got together for the cause yet it is still broken apart. It’s quite ironic if you think about it.
The same people talking about the environment these days are the same people who actively participate in destroying it. They are also the same people who claim animals are worthless creatures and their existance is not really necessary. Everyone knows their geography and science related to natural ressources as well as political and corporate exploitation. Some even go beyond this and claim it’s all a scam and Global Warming is a hoax. The facts are there. A+. But little do they know and/or care about the facts that really matter. I don’t really understand how we got to that point of not only being passive, but actually making things worse. Let’s even consider it being fake, would be so bad to take care of the environment despite the scam and conspiracy theory?
I saw a video today, where a baby elephant rushed to the water to save a man because it believed he was drowning. What’s fascinating is the fact that that baby elephant didn’t care about its life, didn’t care if it was an elephant or a monkey and most importantly didn’t care if the man was really drowning or it was some evil conspiracy. It just jumped in the water and rushed to grab the man with the purest of intentions. I find it sad that most people wouldn’t do the same if it was the other way around. I don’t want to sound depressing, but there aren’t enough people in this world with that impulse. I strongly believe that we were all born with that humanity, empathy and compassion. Only, with most, it disappears a few years later.
I admit, I’m not exactly the girl who stands in front of a bulldozer to stop if from tearing down a tree. But if I had a dollars for every time i was told “it’s just an animal, it’s just a tree” I would be rich, really rich. People nowadays make fun of you if you feed stray cats and dogs, or stop to pet them and play with them or even try to help them if they’re hurt. It’s a lot weirder if you foster an animal who needs a home. You’re also abnormal if you pick up other people’s trash and place it in bins, or walk all the way to it to throw yours instead of just throwing it outside. You’re weird if you do one of those things and crazy if you do all of them. Yes, because we are the superior species, the supremes and we have the right to do whatever we want with the rest of the world.
Its funny how technology is implemented to serve the environmental cause when you can’t even get people to perform these simple, yet mandatory things. Yes, electric cars will reduce the emission of heat-trapping gases, thus protecting the environment. But also if people would stop killing endangered species for fun and dispose of dangerous reflux in the ocean, it would help too.
I think this whole situation shouldn’t only be revived whenever there is a COP. This is a matter of education, intentions and will. Sure the big oil companies should be blamed for a big chunk of how bad things have gotten. But they’re not the only ones taking the world and what’s on it for granted. The world needs to believe in it first, before taking action. Kids should be aware of what is happening and it should be incorporated in their everyday life. As for grown-ass men and women, efforts should be made into making them understand, or suffer the consequences. And by consequences I mean fines or imprisonment depending on the gravity offence. Some people think it’s nonsense to pay a fine or go to jail if you hurt the environment with all of its components included. I say freedom is a right and a privilege that is taken away when someone abuses it by stealing, murdering… Which is uncivilized behavior. Harming the environment is uncivilized and should be treated as such. Such issues will never be solved unless we start believing that we are not the rulers of the environment, we are part of it.
But until then, let’s host extremely expensive events and meetings, to feel better about ourselves, in hopes of changing the world.
