My wife and I had a wild idea for our last road trip to see my in-laws.

We though, maybe we should drive our six hour drive at night instead of during the day time when the kids will want to stop for potty breaks every two hours.

So, at dinner time the day before we planned to leave, we packed up the car and started driving. And what happened along the way, gave me the inspiration for this article.

The Start: Learning to Work the Gaps

While we were driving, my wife and I were talking about anything to keep us awake. One of things we chatted about was when I started out writing and a valuable lesson that I learned:

To create space to write, I had to work the gaps.

Early on, to create space to write, I had to work the gaps of our lives. That meant writing in the morning, or at my lunch times, and on the evening where my wife went out and I put the kids to bed.

It was in those gap moments where I put in the reps as a writer to become a faster at writing, to come up with more ideas, and to start gathering…
