NEW YORK, NY — Controversy erupted in the Greenwich Village comedy world this week after reports emerged that local comic Earl Filmore intentionally misled audiences during an unpaid guest spot Saturday night. Sources at the 10:00pm show say Filmore, an Astoria native, prefaced a subway joke by emphatically stating it took place the week before, when a subsequent investigation revealed it had actually occurred in late 2002. Many in the industry are saying this flagrant mishandling of chronology has fans questioning the integrity of the yuk yuk business as a whole.

“He looked that crowd straight in the eyes and told them a brazen mistruth. It sickens me to think about it,” offered fellow comedian Cynthia Westborrow. “Why not just set the joke up, ‘I was riding the subway back in 2002. It must have been early autumn because the leaves were beginning to change, and activity around NYU campus was picking up’? Is that so hard?”

The fabrication was uncovered by advertising manager Alice Carmichael, who says she noticed something odd while watching from the second row. “My suspicion was piqued when he mentioned a Viagra ad on the R Line. I ride the R to work everyday, and would have definitely noticed a promotion shilling boner pills.” Carmichael says she immediately went home and cross referenced Pfizer campaigns with New York public transit ad space. “I came up with a big flaccid zero. That’s when I realized this Filmore guy was a fraud.”

After posting the discovery online, Carmichael’s bombshell kicked off a tweet-storm:

Even more disturbing, evidence is mounting that Filmore may have spread this same mistruth around different parts of the country. Michigan resident Beatrix Hubbel says she heard the comedian tell the same joke in a Grand Rapids Funny Bone circa 2011. “To think that this guy has taking the entire United States on a ride to Fictionville, it makes me shiver. What ever happened to integrity?”

Authorities are looking into the matter, but say it is difficult to take punitive measures due to the fact that Filmore “absolutely murdered that show”.
