Another Reason to Reform Higher Education

News That Matters
A report published in the Nature Biotechnology journal suggests that there is an increasing mental health crisis at the graduate level. The study found that postgraduate students are six times more likely to have depression or anxiety than the general population. That’s an astounding number, and it begs the question: Why do postgrads feel this way?
Nature asked their readers, and according to one respondent:
“This is not a one-dimensional problem. Financial burden, hostile academia, red tape, tough job market, no proper career guidance. Take your pick.”
“The whole PhD+postdoc system must be reformed or abolished.”
A recent study published in JAMA reports that a ‘wealth shock’ — defined as a sudden financial loss — increases the risk of early death in older adults. According to the researchers:
“In this prospective cohort study that included 8714 adults aged 51 to 61 years at study entry, participants who experienced a negative wealth shock during the 20-year follow-up compared with those with continuous positive wealth had a significantly increased risk of mortality.”
A report by the National Wildlife Federation states that ‘as many as one-third of America’s species are vulnerable’ to extinction.
“Concerns about species decline and loss are not hypothetical: more than 150 U.S. species already have gone extinct, while another 500 are ‘missing in action’ and may also be extinct.”

Delivery drones are getting faster and stronger. A California-based company called Zipline is launching a fleet of drones that can reach a top speed of 75 mph, carry 4 pounds of cargo, and fly 99 miles in one trip.
Even cooler is what Zipline is planning to use this new and improved drone for. Instead of delivering commercial packages or food, they are using the tech to deliver medical supplies to isolated communities in Rwanda.

The numbers are in and it looks like your Facebook data was almost certainly shared with Cambridge Analytica. Facebook reported yesterday that 87 million user profiles were likely accessed. According to Facebook’s CTO, Mike Schroepfer:
“Given the scale and sophistication of the activity we’ve seen, we believe most people on Facebook could have had their public profile scraped in this way.”
