News That Matters

Another reason to eat your greens… 🥦 🥦

According to a new study, a chemical found in certain vegetables was found to prevent colon cancer in mice. The chemical, indole-3-carbinol — which is present in things like kale, cabbage, and broccoli — was found to protect against gut inflammation and colon cancer.

Although health benefits of vegetables have been determined, this is the first study that found how I3C in the diet can prevent colon inflammation and cancer by activating a protein called the aryl hydrocarbon receptor, or AhR.

Also interesting is that researchers found that even in mice that were already developing cancer, by switching to a veggie-loaded diet, they had fewer and more benign tumors.

Will it pop? 💸 💸

Real or a bubble? No one knows. But whatever cryptocurrency is, it’s making waves on the market as it recovers from a 60% decline this year.

Bitcoin reached a $6,000 value earlier this year, but in the months since, it and other cryptocurrencies have lost value. The market for all crypto went down to $190 billion — as opposed to $835 billion at the beginning of the year. Things are looking up again, though, as many cryptocurrencies saw growth over the past week.

“We’ve seen six big bubbles, each more epic than the previous one, and each bubble is astonishing when they’re happening but when you look back they look like pimples on a chart. With each of these bubbles we have a tremendous surge of activity and that’s what we’re seeing right now.” — Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin

Spam Begone! ✉️ 📭

No, that’s not a new product on an infomercial, we’ve just got some tips for you on how to finally get those emails and calls to stop flooding your inbox and cell phone.

  1. Spammers vs. Scammers: Spammers are organizations you may have some sort of connection to that call you a lot asking for money or contributions. In this case, politely ask to be taken off their list. Scammers try to cheat and con you out of money. These are the ones you report and block
  2. Bulk Filter Spam Calls: Both Android and iPhone users can filter spammers and scammers at the carrier level, too. All four of the major carriers in the United States have apps and services to help you do so
  3. If all else fails: Use Do Not Disturb. It’s an extreme measure, but there is a feature where you can turn off receiving calls from anyone not in your contacts list.

Whale hello there! 🐳 🐳

That’s what diver Paul Lecomte is hearing every day as he leads a team of scientists and researchers in an effort to create the largest soundscape of the ocean ever recorded.

The sound recordings are going to be used to help determine how marine life is affected by human-made sounds that tend to drown out (no pun intended) the natural sounds of the ocean.

Once the data is compiled, there is hope that policymakers will issue ordinances requiring ‘ocean quiet zones’ that will protect natural life from the destructive man-made noises that distract and prevent animals from communicating and mating.

The shrinks are joining the nerds 🤓

Tech companies are hiring mental health professionals to help come up with persuasive technology to change the way humans behave.

This technique, also known as persuasive design, is built into thousands of games and apps, and companies like Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft rely on it to encourage specific human behavior starting from a very young age.

Obviously, this is a scary proposition, and a number of mental health professionals have petitioned the American Psychological Association to look into the ethics of the situation.

A different kind of ‘home’school 🏠 🏫

Wonderschool is creating the Wonder-girls and boys of the future right from educators’ homes. The company has helped launch 140 preschools in the Bay Area, L.A., and New York City, all out of the homes of licensed educators.

“Finding good childcare has become one of the most difficult experiences for families. I’ve seen parents who are making a livable wage in urban cities like San Francisco and New York still struggle to find and afford quality childcare” says co-founder and CEO Chris Bennett. “We wanted to deliver a solution for parents that also had the potential to create jobs and empower the caregiver — that’s Wonderschool.”

Early success of the programs has led to $20 million in Series A funding and an opportunity to scale even more.
