News That Matters:

  • After spending 8 months in a fake Mars habitat (aka, Hawaii), the crew emerged victorious. Barbaric yawps aside, this fifth mock mission went full tilt. They communicated with Earth using 20 to 40 minute delays, ate only preserved foods and a grown veggie or two, and most difficult, going outside required the use of a full space suit.
  • The Emmy’s happened this weekend. Maybe you caught them, maybe you didn’t. We’re all suckers for celebrities and “Oh my gosh, what was she wearing”. Yah, we’re not immune either. But we are big fans of Vanity Fair, their reporting, and the gorgeous design of their site. So, we give you the link to celeb fashion from the Emms, courtesy of VF.
  • Finally, if you’re still enamored by Apple’s new unlock-with-your-face iPhone X and are curious how developers are going to use it, look no further than Apple’s official 7-minute talk. Face tracking. We were half expecting Thomas Cruise to jump out of a futuristic self-driving pod-car and yell, “Minority Report!” But alas, he probably blew the event budget. Always next year, Apple.

What We’re Reading

Fred Wilson is a well-respected startup investor. He’s made some incredible bets in his career that have paid off handsomely, including Twitter, and was an early proponent of Bitcoin and the entire cryptocurrency space. He wrote a post yesterday, discussing a new way to look at Worry. Whether that’s in your life, investing for the future, or managing a business.

What We’re Listening To

It’s podcast season in Mission land and boy do we have some exciting news coming forthwith. But in the meantime, we checked out the latest A16Z’s smartest of the smart podcast on maps. We know what you’re thinking. There’s nothing exciting about maps. That is, until, it’s the thing controlling all the self-driving cars on the highway. The wheels on the bus go vroom vroom, y’all. Besides, indoor maps coming this fall from our friends at Apple. Say whaaaaaat, Siri?

What We’re Watching

Like ninjas? Us too. That’s why we’re fans of America Ninja Warrior, the nearly decade-long running program with “normal” people doing abnormal athletic tests of agility (heh, yah we could totally do that handstand double axel off a plush ratchet thingamajig too). The season finale was last night and is getting the highest ratings of the year. Did you know 70,000 people applied to be a part of the action, this season alone? Hope you’ve got health insurance.

Ever heard of Halo Top ice cream? Their tagline is 250-total-calorie pints packed with protein. Basically, eat an entire pint without feeling guilty. We’re big fans of the stuff in our households and have been known to house a pint (ahem, two) in one sitting. Sorry, Susan Powder. But they just released some new ad creative with a new commercial. It’s different, that’s for sure. But I’d love to know your thoughts on the matter. Reach out: sean@themission.co.
