Here’s What To Do When You Royally Screw Up
Why have I done this so many times?
Last night, my wife and I were driving to a movie.
“Would you say embarrassment/shame have been major themes in your life?” I asked her. “What about hard conversations? Would you say you’ve had a lot of those?”
She responded no, not really. Aside from a few difficult conversations with her roommates in college, not much in the past decade.
I gave a hollow chuckle.
Seems like I’ve experienced more embarrassment, shame, and hard conversations than anyone I know.
What To Do When You Royally Screw Up
I royally screwed up yesterday. Again.
I was contracted to give a leadership training to a group of 50 teenagers at a summer camp. I was hired for the whole week, leading counselors and students through our leadership curriculum.
The first night, I gave a 5-minute speech to kick things off. 5 minutes was all it took for everything to fall apart.
In efforts to build trust and encourage vulnerability, I decided to tell a short, mild story about my struggles with pornography growing up. I hadn’t communicated this beforehand with anyone — I didn’t think I needed to.
