One Idea to Change the (Entire?) Game

Episode 13 of The Mission Daily

“For studying courage in textbooks doesn’t make you any more courageous than eating cow meat makes you bovine. By some mysterious mental mechanism, people fail to realize that the principal thing you can learn from a professor is how to be a professor — and the chief thing you can learn from, say, a life coach or inspirational speaker is how to become a life coach or inspirational speaker. So remember that the heroes of history were not classicists and library rats, those people who live vicariously in their texts. They were people of deeds and had to be endowed with the spirit of risk taking.” — Nassim Nicholas Taleb, author of Skin in the Game

Why does the idea of “skin in the game” matter so much?

And how can we use this idea (and the others from Skin in the Game) to improve our own lives, and the lives of others?

Health

As you get older, your bones grow weaker — that’s nature at work.

Now, scientists are working to use nature to help slow that process. Instead of manufactured medicines that often disrupt the natural remodeling cycle of bones, researchers are looking at ways to utilize curcumin, the main ingredient in tumeric, as a more natural and organic method of treating bone disease.

So for strong bones, drink your milk… and maybe take a side dose of curcumin.

Wealth

Place your bets!

The Supreme Court overturned a 1992 ban on sports betting, which means a windfall of new, legalized gambling profits could be coming to just about every state.

For a long time, sports leagues such as the NFL, NBA, and MLB, among others, were concerned that sports betting could upset the integrity of their sports. Recently, however, many league commissioners have changed their tune — especially since they’ve started lobbying to receive a 1% integrity fee on all bets. That’d be quite the chunk of change coming from what’s estimated to be a $150 billion pot that exists in the underground world of sports wagering.

Imagine a future where you didn’t have to call up your doctor’s office and wait on hold just to make an appointment … six months from now.

That future is getting closer and closer as Google unveiled new AI technology called Google Duplex that will be able to assist users in everyday activities such as making phone calls and accomplishing specific tasks. Unlike Siri or Alexa, Duplex is much more intuitive and can adapt even when a conversation doesn’t go as planned.

TV in 15 minutes or less!

That’s the goal of NewTV, a video startup from Hollywood bigwig Jeffrey Katzenberg. Katzenberg secured $800 million to finance the new video streaming network, which aims to produce content with the quality of a Netflix or Hulu but at the length of an average Youtube clip, which is under 15 minutes.

No shows have been announced, and it’s still unclear on which platforms they will run when they do premiere, but it seems like the future of TV is going to be coming to you in bite-sized pieces.
