How to Make World-Class Choices In Every Area of Your Life
Enormous success depends entirely on the quality of your choices.
“If you want to have world-class success, you need to make world-class choices.” -Darren Hardy
Who you are today is a result of your choices.
What you have today is a result of your choices.
Who you will be tomorrow will be a result of your choices.
If you want to live a world-class lifestyle, you need to make world-class choices.
This is how you transform from ordinary to extraordinary. This is how you become an evolved version of yourself.
Darren Hardy once wrote:
“Most people drift through life without devoting much conscious energy to figuring out specifically what they want and what they need to do to get themselves there.”
Most people don’t make world-class choices. Most people make very little effort to determine what they want and make a plan to get there.
Common choices create common results. If you want a different life, you’re going to have to start doing things differently.
Here’s how to start making world-class choices in every area of your life.
“If you want to have more success, you need to become more.” -Jim Rohn
Design a World-Class Environment First
“If we do not create and control our environment, our environment creates and controls us.” -Marshall Goldsmith
Your environment is the single most powerful factor that influences your decisions.
Right now, every single person in the world is living in one of two environments: one they control, or one that controls them.
Steven Pressfield once wrote, “An individual is free only to the extent of his own self-mastery. Those who will not govern themselves are condemned to find masters to govern over them.”
Most people don’t take the time to design their environment. As a result, their environment dictates their life, often facilitating bad habits and negative behaviors.
This means most people live reactionary lives. Instead of living on their own terms, they are slaves to whatever requests, emails, and notifications pop up.
This is why most people live lives that are, frankly, mediocre.
You need the bedrock of a world-class environment to make world-class choices consistently.
Darren Hardy once made the point that if you hang around negative people, you can’t expect a positive result. The same principle is true for your environment. If you constantly operate in a mediocre habitat, you’ll never consistently produce world-class choices.
“If your lifestyle does not add to your healing, it will subtract from it.” -Todd Brison
If you want to start making world-class choices, it starts with your environment. Even a small upgrade in environment can produce enormous mental shifts, allowing 10x or even 100x more output.
If you constantly operate in an environment that controls you, you’ll never dictate the terms for your success — or your life.
“Once you design the right conditions, your desired behavior naturally follows.” -Benjamin Hardy
The Good Plan You Follow is Better Than the Perfect One You Don’t
“Most people would rather make a million dollars in their head every night than $100 dollars in cash every day.” -George Horace Lorimer
Most people will continue getting high on the dopamine of solely “dreaming” and journaling about their ideal life, without ever doing any meaningful work to make those goals happen.
The bedrock for sustaining any new behavioral change is to follow a plan you know you’ll stick to, no matter what. Going cold-turkey might work for some people, but it’s usually too much, too soon.
The good plan you can actually follow is far better than a great plan you won’t be able to stick to.
In the words of Benjamin Hardy, “Don’t worry about the output when you’re trying to build momentum. Instead, just get yourself to do whatever you feel you need to do.”
Most people think evolving into a better version of yourself happens very quickly. It doesn’t. These mental transformations take time, and only when new behavior is sustained.
It took you a long time to develop your mindset and habits. It’ll take some time to change.
“Small, seemingly inconsistent steps, completed consistently over time, will create a radical difference.” -Darren Hardy
If you want to start making world-class choices, start small.
If you’re used to ordering fast food 4+ times a week, vowing to stop completely “from now on” is a recipe for quick failure. Same for going to the gym, drinking less alcohol, watching less TV, being a better husband, or any other behavior you want to change.
Most people do too much, too soon.
Start small, with a plan you will stick to.
“Tiny steps will take you much farther than infrequent home runs.” -Niklas Goeke
You Will Only Be as Great as You Think You Can Be
“You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.” -Michael Jordan
Iconic entrepreneur Tim Ferriss once remarked, “It’s lonely at the top. 99% of people are convinced they are incapable of achieving great things, so they aim for mediocre.”
World-class performers expect themselves to make world-class choices.
If you want to start living a world-class lifestyle, you need to start expecting greatness from yourself.
Most people don’t expect much from themselves. For them, “good” is good-enough. Waking up on time to do good-enough work at a good-enough job satisfies most of their personal expectations.
You will only be as great as you expect of yourself.
In his book, The Icarus Deception, Seth Godin writes:
“When you decide you’re not talented enough or not ready to speak up, when you buy the line about not being well trained or well born enough to make a difference, you cede your power to those in authority.”
If you don’t think you’re capable of making extraordinary, world-class choices, you (usually unknowingly) cede your power to those around you.
This is not the path to making better choices.
When I was growing up, I looked at pornography several times a week for about a 15-year period. Like a terrified alcoholic, I needed my “drink” to get me through even the most basic challenges. Eventually, I began believing I would never be able to stop.
I can vividly recall one day where I sadly realized I would have to hide my habit from my wife if I got married someday.
I truly believed I couldn’t stop. I had no faith in myself, or my future.
It wasn’t until years of counseling and therapy for deeper issues that I finally began believing living a life without pornography was even possible.
I haven’t looked at porn in years. Every day, I wake up and expect from myself that today is another day I choose intimacy and connection, not addiction and isolation.
Expect greatness from yourself.
“As a man thinketh, so he is. As he continues to think, so he remains.” -James Allen
Confidence and Self-Belief Are a Result of Positive Choices
“Confidence is a byproduct of positive choices.” -Benjamin Hardy
Most people mistakenly believe the path to making better choices starts with how they feel. “Once I feel good,” they think to themselves, “I’ll make better choices.”
So they wait. But those feelings rarely come.
This is because the process is actually the opposite.
Choices create feelings. Choices create new identities.
It starts with you. It doesn’t matter how crummy, or unconfident, or tired you feel — good choices beget good feelings. If you want to feel better, confidence and self-belief are natural byproducts of making good choices.
“Negative emotions are a call to action. When you feel them, you’re supposed to do something. Positive emotions, on the other hand, are rewards for taking the proper action.” -Mark Manson
Most people will continue waiting until they “feel good” enough to make a choice. They wait until the feelings are there so they can be a better husband, finally buy a gym membership, or start drinking less alcohol.
But, this is backwards. First, we choose. Then, we feel.
If you want to feel confident and have unshakable self-belief, make positive choices.
Positive feelings will follow.
We are what we repeatedly do.” -Aristotle
“Isn’t it comforting to know you only need to take a series of tiny steps, consistently, over time, to radically improve your life?” -Darren Hardy
Consistently making world-class choices will take time to develop.
Start with creating a world-class environment. Create a plan you’ll actually follow, even if there are better plans out there. Spend time developing a belief that you can succeed.
Most people think the slow progress of tiny steps isn’t fast enough. They don’t see immediate results, so they give up.
This is why most people will never create a world-class lifestyle for themselves. Like any other skill, making world-class decisions takes practice.
Consistent tiny steps are better than infrequent home runs. Small things become big things, in the long-run.
Creating a world-class lifestyle is not complicated. It it simply a matter of making better choices, every day.
Make better choices today.
